Throw him to the wolves? The team sucked hard last night...and still CB only got 27 shots on net. We haven't given up 30+ all year as of yet. It's not like he's facing 39.4 shots a game like Churchill did. How do young players get better? They play and they practice. We pump Despres, Anthony, Sauve, Grant, etc etc out there, but when it comes to Mayer, a highly touted prospect in desperate need of experience in this league, we go "Oh let him split time with Travis". Mayer's development to hockey at this level gets stunted if he's playing 1 game a week at best. Mayer has potential and talent. Obvious the organization believed that too or else they would have drafted a badly needed Euro forward instead of the goalie. As I said, I expected a rough month or so for Mayer needing to adapt to things over here and the game at this level, but if he plays he will get better. Also after losing 2 games while only scoring 1 goal, you could also state a 20 year old forward is even more desperately needed, because obviously our same old problem is still around. We don't score many goals. I stick by my original opinion on our 20 year old situation. I know I could end up being wrong. Not the first time. First and probably only read of this thread. I think I mostly agree with you. 88.9 guys were way off base. Mayer stunk. I have no problem with that. He needs to play and learn. I thought his decision making was slow. He thought he had goal #2, but he's never seen quickness like this in Europe. He looked like he was focussing on technique rather than trusting it and playing the play. On a number of stops and goals he looked too mechanical. He also goes down too quickly, and it seemed obvious CB was aiming high and winning. I was not a fan of our breakout system. I know it's the 'new' way of doing things, but IMO the near forward at least has to stay low and support the breakout. Too many times the D were hung to dry with no one in sight. They had a lot of odd man chances on those turnovers. Bellevance-Roy played great. CB must be really happy with their netminders. Dido had a chip on his shoulder from the first drop. geez boy, ya gotta learn to play the game and not get caught up in that crap. It will only get worse if you react like that. That check where you got caught was totally clean. You're lucky you can still walk with no cane! Anthony showed some brilliance. That one shift were he set up three guys was awesome! I can't wait till he's comfortable out there and JB is comfortable with him. Interesting that PH was put with two older french guys. I guess he was hoping experience would overcome not playing together. It didn't work. Amyot threw a check! 1st shift, I didn't check the box, but I saw were very few hits. Damn I like Despres. I'm very curious to see how high he's picked. I'll bet a case of beer it's higher than Sauve! I am with Canucklehead...I don't think we can or should single out any one player...(ie. Mayer stunk). Quite frankly we can put almost everyone's name in there along with, our PP stunk, our PK stunk, our breakouts stunk, etc. Simply put, the Sea Dogs stunk last night. I said previously the thing which stunk the most is we had a very nice size crowd in the building and they left with a sour taste in their mouths. Us die hards will be there win or lose put the casual attenders saw nothing to entice them to return. These guys are good we just had a bad night...

I think they should put Anthony out with Picard and F.Charland. When Esposito came into the league he was playing beside Radulov. I haven't really seen much of Stoddard. When we first acquired him from Cape Breton, this kid showed a lot of promise. It's only early yet, but I hope he can step up his game. It's going to take Picard-Hooper a few games to get use to the system, and the players, before we really see why he is a point per game player.I was not impress with Grant. This kid has all the tools to be a great defenceman in this league, but his decision making at times, can be questioned. I believe Mayer will bounce back. Four goals was scored on the power play. The boys have to stay out of the box, It seems like every year the ref's calls everything at the beginning of the year, but eases up at the end.

You guys are like a bunch of yoyos. Everything is eithr wonderful or horrible. Take a pill it was one game. The intoductions were long and boring it killed the game. Announcers were crap and they lost the crowd right from the start. The music was crap and then the speaker was broken.
One question will Thomas play on Sunday?

It's not like he's facing 39.4 shots a game like Churchill did. Yes, the team sucked hard, thus my comment about leaving Mayer hung out to dry. Which the Dogs did more than once. And letting 6 goals in on 27 shots doesn't cut it. Is that how Martin Bartos developed so well? Or David Stich? By giving them lots of playing time? Highly touted Euro prospects that some could argue were mismanaged. What were they, 2nd and 3rd overall Euros? Neither even drafted in their draft years? Did you see how badly Stich played on the back half of the season, and do you think ANY of it could have to do with being worn out? As far as Despres and Anthony are concerned, I didn't see Despres on the ice for top pairing minutes, nor did I see Anthony getting big minutes. Even Sauve last season wasn't getting huge minutes right off the bat. Development is not solely based on a premise of the more minutes played the faster/better you develop. Dealing with 16/17 year old kids, some in a different country and culture, with a QMJHL learning curve to deal with and a confidence level that can likely be easily shaken makes developing a player quite complicated. No disagreement there, just that I think it's putting too much on the kid to expect him to come out of the gates as a bonafide starter in this league. Another 20 year old forward won't matter if the Dogs are allowing 6 goals on 27 shots. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. I just hate to see young kids with loads of skill not realize their potential, and I feel part of it could be asking too much too soon.

I'm not going to quote your post Berner because that would be one hell of a long post before I even got to replying. Here goes.
You list Bartos and Stich. Are you forgetting the common denominator with those two? Both got injured in their first year. Bartos was going along okay before he got hurt. Not great but decent. He sure seemed to do well in Bathurst the following year. Stich? He had like 15 points I believe when he got hurt, just before the halfway mark of the year last year. He was on pace for 30+ points as a 17 year old D-man, which is damn good IMO, especially on the low scoring team we had. He hopped straight from injury (without even playing a game for us I believe) and into that prospect's game, and understandably sucked. He watched his draft ranking fall and fall and fall. That killed his second half IMO much worse than anything else.
Oh yeah...how did Felix Schutz do for us in his first year? Pretty good didn't he? Lemme try to think of another Euro who came over and played right away and did good...oh yes, some kid named Voracek. I heard he had a decent year. ;D
It's all a moot point anyway. If we don't have a capable backup on staff, we have to keep Fullerton. Toss around names all we want but we'd have to make a move if it's going to be someone other than Fullerton, because Passingham isn't ready. Not a knock on Passingham. He is young and will likely develop into a goalie we can use, but we can't use him right now. We need someone that can handle like 20-25 games and that isn't 20 years old, IMO. Giving Mayer 45-50 games shouldn't be overworking him.
