Charlie Pens has been invited to the Lewiston MaineIacs training camp. How was he as a player in Cape Breton last year?? What can we expect to see from him??? Any reason he is not there this year? Was he traded to Lewiston??

I know he had a few concussions but other then that I don't know. He was my favorite Eagles player just because of his name. He was Pens22.

Very physical defensive defenceman who was quietly effective on our blueline last year until a string of concussions did him in.
Good kid who was well-liked by teammates and gave his all......... definitely major junior quality..........but it's all a matter of whether or not he can overcome his history of concussions.
He's not here this year I believe because the Eagles decided his health issues were too much of a risk.
I don't think he was traded to Lewiston- I think you guys just picked him up as a free agent tryout.
You may also remember Charlie from a fight with Danick Hudon-Paquette in Lewiston last October.

I don't know but this almost seems irresponsible of Lewiston. I know the kid probably just wants to play hockey but he's had some serious (is that not right?) concussion issues and I think a team has to take some responsibility for that and not allow a player to continue to put themselves in danger...

There are varying reports as to how severe Pens's concussion problems have been... I've heard from some sources he's "only" had 2 or 3. I put only in quotes because I don't want to diminish the severity of any concussion, but it may possibly be a situation where him playing isn't as significant a risk as believed. Perhaps the Eagles didn't see a long term future in him, but a team like Lewiston that is making a run for it feels that the risk could be worth it if he can develop into a solid piece of a championship team.
Regardless of the reasons, best of luck & health to Charlie Pens this season! He was a well liked member of the Eagles in his short time here.

I never ever saw anyone weeble and wobble like he did last year when he got hit in the corner. I wish him the best but after that hit I am not sure.

If the Doctor's clear Pens, then I don't see what burden falls on Lewiston. If you stop dressing players because they may get injured, then the league may as well fold because anybody can get hurt out there. The decision as to him playing, and any risks would fall onto Pens and his parents, not Lewiston IMO.

If players want they just go from doctor to doctor until they find the answer they're looking for. IMO a responsibility falls on every team when it comes to some issue like concussions.

I don’t disagree that the burden falls on Lewy, but let’s not go leaping to conclusions. Some seem pretty quick to ascribe noble benevolence to their own club and sinister motives on the opposition. Any real confirmation he was let go medically and not just dropped? Any evidence anyone actually doctor-shopped? Yes, I’m reluctant to assume irresponsibility by Lewy, but Pens is currently battling for our #8 defensive spot (maybe as high as #7 if Michalik goes into the tank), not exactly a guy they’re prone to cut corners to keep.

well he survived the first cuts, made a very good impression on all the people sitting around me in the three intrasquad games. If he makes it, hell have to keep his head up at all yimes, and think twice on fighting. He is a physical player so it won't be easy.

There's no reason, other than medical, why Charlie shouldn't make your squad. He's a very good defenseman with a very suspect injury. He'd make ours in a heartbeat if we thought he was healthy enough. But if memory serves me correctly, many on this board, myself included, thought he should hang up the skates and concentrate on other things. The last time I saw him leave the ice made me sick in my stomach...I love hockey, but there's more important things in life. But if he's healthy, good for him...Lewy would be a great place for him and vice versa. There's no doubting when healthy he can play in this league.
