I actually think that Viktor Hertzberg is really developing nicely for the Eagles and has been one of their most consistent and productive players lately. However, every time I hear Ken MacNeil go on about Hertzberg closing in on the Rookie Scoring Record, I wish he would point out that Hertzberg is 18 and that James Sheppard set that record as a 16 year old. It would make a lot more sense to me if that particular record was broken down by age; 16 year old rookie record, 17 year rookie record and so on. Perhaps some year we might have a 19 year old Euro rookie set an unbelievable mark on his way to the NHL the next year. That being said, I really do hope that Hertzberg continues his excellent play with his linemates ? and ? and sets a new 18 year old rookie scoring record. He might achieve that mark on this next road trip? I know the Q league makes no age distinction but I'm sure individual teams could!

He is still a rookie regardless of his age.

He is still a rookie regardless of his age. Naw, I agree with reality - 18-year-old rookies shouldn't be lumped in the same category with 16 year old rookies. Heck in 98-99, a 19-year-old Ladislav Nagy scored 71 goals for Halifax and was eligible for "rookie" awards - a bit ridiculous. The NHL has made a rule to keep things like that from happening..... you have to be, I think, 26 or younger (or maybe it's under 26) to be eligible for the Calder. They made that rule after a 32-or-so year old Sergei Makarov came to North America and won the Calder with the Calgary Flames, despite having over 10 years experience playing at the top levels in Russia and dominating the top Canadian NHLers at Canada Cup and World Championship tournaments. Only reason he couldn't head to the NHL earlier, obviously, was the Iron Curtain. I know the whole 18 yo rookie vs 16 yo rookie example in the Q isn't nearly as extreme as that, but I do agree with reality's point. I also agree with him that Hertzberg has had a very nice rookie season, is a pleasure to watch play with his speed and enthusiasm, and has indeed been one of our most consistent and productive players lately. I had a good feeling about him at the start of the season when I noticed it only took him a few games (5 maybe, if that?) to look comfortable on Q ice and acclimatized to the North American game. Usually, even with some high-end Import players, it takes at least a good 20 games.

No one is arguing about him being a rookie. I suggested acknowledging his accomplishments as setting an 18 year old Rookie Scoring record.
However, I think you would admit that there is a huge difference in a 16 year old breaking into the league giving up 4 full years to the 20 year olds and an 18 year old breaking into the league and giving up 2 full years of age and development. Very few players get to play as 16 year olds and then only some of them play a full time contributing role. I just feel that what James Sheppard did as a 16 year old was very special.

Very special ? 14 g and 45 pts is very special at 16 ? Nice numbers from a 16 YO for sure ... sort of expected from the 1st overall pick as a forward ... a good sign of great things to come ... but not really anything special. Am I quoting the wrong numbers or something ?

I think they changed the ruling after that year... like how they changed the trading rules after the bommerang trades... my favorite was how they implemented a lottery for the first pick 1/2 through the season while Bathurst was in last place lol.

I think they still allow 18 year olds to win ROTY because a player can legitimately play Midget at 17 and break into the Q at 18. Gerrad Grant is an example of this.

18 year olds can win ROY but not 19 year olds. It's a good looking year for rookies scoring wise (mostly euros).
Straka, Galiev, Hrivk are roughly a point per game. Bourque and Kabanov are a point per game but have played a lot less. Up and comers, Hertzberg and Culek are starting to pick it up along with many others.
Not to mention other rookies who aren't putting up the same type of points that are looking real solid, Huberdeau, Philips, Konrad, Polasek, etc
