Based on what I know about trading draft picks from playing EA Sports NHL games, I'm sure you can trade a second and a twelfth for a first easily. Let's package each of our seconds with one of our twelfths, and get three more firsts.

Yeah just pick guys going the NCAA route and hope they change their mind. Guess thats taboo to talk about though. But you also have to be mindful of how much room you have on your 50 man list. Quite often you'll see a few teams pass on their 11th and 12th round picks because they aren't willing to trim somebody from their list to replace with the guys available. I'm not sure exactly how many picks Halifax has in the upcoming draft ... and they'll probably trade a few for a player or two ... but chances are that right now you have more picks than you have room on your 50 man list. I know you'll make some new room going into the draft ... but the 11th and 12th round picks have to be considered in that way. As of now Halifax has 47 guys on their 50-man list: *next years age is listed AMYOT, Pascal - 20 BETY , Charles - 20 CICHY, Mike - 20 DELMAS, Peter - 20 DIMITRUK, Paul - 20 GRANT, Gerrad - 20 STODDARD, Matthew - 20 BELANGER, Justin - 19 BERNARD, Jessyko - 19 BLOIS, Kody - 19 CALDWELL, Sam - 19 CORBEIL-THERIAULT, Mathieu - 19 COSTELLO, Jordan - 19 ENGLISH, Matthew - 19 MACINTYRE, Jamie - 19 MAGNAN, Philippe - 19 MATHESON, Ryan - 19 NICKERSON, Ryan - 19 RANDELL, Travis - 19 SARRACINI, Joseph - 19 SMITH, Andrew - 19 WIGGINTON, Andrew - 19 ABELTSHAUSER, Konrad - 18 BELANGER, Maxime - 18 BERNARD, Brett - 18 CHISHOLM, Randy - 18 CLARKE, Garrett - 18 DESJARDINS, Gabriel - 18 GELINAS, Carl - 18 GILLARD, Stephen - 18 GRONDIN, Joel - 18 HANNAY, Sawyer - 18 LEMIEUX, Alex - 18 MACDONALD, Bradley - 18 MCGUIGAN, Dylan - 18 MYERS, Matthew - 18 NADEAU, Maxime - 18 ORR, Kody - 18 PELLETIER, Jonathan - 18 TREMBLAY , Guillaume - 18 ANDREWS, Brent - 17 BISHOP, Jamie - 17 BOUDREAU, Matthew - 17 LEWIS, Trey - 17 Guys off the list for sure: MALONE, Brad BAHM, Linden KNOTEK, Tomas - 20 (euro special list) After those 3, Halifax is down to 44...only 6 available spots so they will have to drop a bunch of guys...Halifax has 13 picks in the 2010 draft over the 12 rounds...so ideally they would want to get down to 35...13 AAA picks + 1 euro pick = 49...gives them a buffer of 1 spot. So to get down to 35 they would have to drop 9 guys... Guys I would drop for sure: Sam Caldwell, 19 Matthew English, 19 Jamie MacIntyre, 19 Phillipe Magnan, 19 Joseph Saracini, 19 Maxime Belanger, 18 Maxime Nadeau, 18 Guillaume Tremblay, 18 That is 8 guys...you could outright release Stoddard as well to make it 9 and Halifax doesnt really lose much off the 50-man list and they get down to 35 guys...

Hali tend to do well in the 6-7-8 rounds and has grabbed a bunch of solid Q player in those rounds over the last several years. Can't remember too many 11-12th round picks but all you have to do is look at last year to see how those picks can payoff. The Moose did well picking Gillard and Orr (NCAA types) in the 11th and 12th rounds last year. Gillard has really paid off and unfortunately for Orr he was in a car accident a few weeks before camp, didn't have a great camp and probably wasn't guaranteed ice time so I believe he left after 48 hours.
The Moose may as well swing for the fence with those picks as they should already have their bases covered with a number of early pick this year. For example if a guy like Darcy Ashley looks pretty serious to go NCAA and is still around at that point then you pick him and try to do what you did with Gillard the year before.

Guennette was a late round pick wasn't he but around about 9th I think.
Derrick Kent was taken 12th or 13th round too.

It comes down to...would you rather keep Mike Cichy on the 50-man list or an 18 year old who played Midget AA last year? (Nadeau/Tremblay/Belanger). Cichy wont report...but Halifax is still better served to keep him protected than guys who didnt even play high level Midget, or Jr A at age 17...

Even if he only played a handful of games and had his career come to and end, it's still an accomplishment for him. If you had seen him in his rookie, or even 2nd year in the Q, nobody, and I mean, nobody, would have bet on him playing a single game in the NHL.

He's on the roster and getting a regular NHL paycheque. Thats all I'd give a shit about. I'll take 15 years of that please.

Like Leask said I wouldn't mind making Pardy's salary ($700k) for the next 15 years....wether he stays in the leauge for 15 years is a different story.
