We finished the season in dead last, and sometimes even a hardcore Moosehead fan, can almost question this team. Do we have what it takes to be a contender in the next 2 Years. Well we have a lot to look forward to, and draft picks are just the tip of the iceburg. You could debate either way that a 1st or 2nd overall Midget Draft Pick, and a 3rd Overall Euro draft pick can do for this team. Those 2 picks alone can’t make this team a contender next year. The draft alone is not why many of us Moosehead fans are excited about our future. To break it down this is what gets me excited about t he future. Its what sets us apart from many older teams in the league who will be losing many 19 and 20 year olds, and have few strong 16-17s. I will not discuss every player, but will mention the key, areas that gives me the hope we will soon be a strong contender:
GOALTENDING: We have a goalie in Matieu Corbeil that we drafted. Corbeil has showed progress, and growth from the beginning. Although he has not been spectacular every night he has done quite well for the team in front of him. Being in nets for a bottom dweller for 2 years would be somewhat difficult, and he has really shown tough. Considering that many of the Mooseheads goaltending attempts such as Pascal Leclair, Roger Kennedy, and even Churchill never really took off. Those players always left a fan weary of could these guys ever have or keep a #1 goal tender role. I am not the only person me who is excited with Corbs, you just have to see his ranking in the upcoming NHL Draft. To add to our goaltending department we have a solid somewhat proven goaltender in Peter Delmas, which does not only make an excellent teacher, and competitive peer for Corbeil, he makes a good trade assest. Not a 20 year old superstar, but very close, as thats why I say somewhat proven.
DEFENCE: We have one of the youngest if not youngest defensive cores in the league. Also in my opinion we have one of the most raw skilled, and untapped talented defensive end in our league. With Konrad Abelthauser we have a very potential #1-2 D-men for the next 2 years. Myself and afew others have questioned even trading this guy, and keeping Knotek and our possible 3rd overall Euro pick. This would be a option but Konrads potential is high, and from what I have noticed he seems to be a very strong team player who could help as much in the dressing room as he does on the ice. Much like Konrad I am also impressed with Steve Gillard, and believe he could be the other possible 1-2 d-men for us. Pascal Aymot will make a useful 20 year old D, but does not really excite me for the future, as much as a Sawyer Hannay. Sawyer is our diamond in the ruff. This kid could easily graduate from this team as a likeable, and useful Defencemen that will be looked back at, and said he was a long shot to make the team. Jamie Bishop is my long shot as to be the d-men that leads us into the future. Next year when the competiion is tighter for spots will determine how excited I am about his future on the team. Lastly on defence Garrett Clark, we all know all about this kid, and his potential. Garrett’s number one obstacle is himself if he can stay in line up, and somewhat disciplined, and keep improving with his hockey he could be very useful defensemen on this team. With that being said if he does become a worth Q player, and not just a coach’s nightmare the Moose may be forced to trade him. His value will be too high not to. He’s 17 years old, and much as he has a bad rap around the league, many fans love to hate him, and would love to have him. He could easily become an Ramzi Abid or Edy Laraque, where he gets under the opposing teams skin , but they have a little piece that wishes he were on their team.
FORWARDS: This is the area where I am least excited at the moment, and more just sitting back to see when many of our forwards tap into their raw scoring skills. Carl Gelinas would be our most impressive forward, and could be the darkhorse to be the scoring leader on this team. To me he is like David Brine, a player that seasons with age. Brent Andrews will either boom or bust as he ages and the competetion for spots gets tougher. I believe he is really going to turn it up. I try not to forget how young he is. Maybe I am using that as an excuse, but do believe he will be a scorer. The other forwards such as Alex Lemiuex, Jesskyo Bernard, and Brad MacDonald will not be superstars on this team but add them with some of our 2009/2010 draft picks and we will have very solid 3rd and 4th lines if not a solid #2 line. Also with forwards we have the hope that a superstar is waiting in the wings through trade, draft or someone on the present team steping up. Draft or trade are more likely options.
Drafts, and Trades: These 2 areas, give me some hope because I believe we have a good GM, that will use his abilities to get us some strong draft picks, and make some very good trades. In my eyes he has already proven this with getting Garrett Clark, Peter Delmas, and Brad MacDonald these were very good deals, that could possibly create a strong future for us. If Cam Russell the Coach was as good as Cam the GM I would be way more excited about our future than I already am.

Trades, and drafting the only 2 ways. Well kinda yes they are the building block. But every player on the team is either traded or drafted to get on the team in the first place. Well besides walk -ons. Good sensible trades and drafting. I wasnt asking any questions I was telling you what i feel. But for a contender for next year there is only so much trading and drafting you can do alot of the other things are going to also have to fall into place: ie Andrews, Garrett getting his act to together, Konrad progressing in his skills.

I think you guys can take a step forward next year, I can't see you guys a contender without making 2-3 big trades to load up. Your 19 and 20 year olds will be pretty mediocre as a group. Your most skilled guys will be 16-17-18.
I think if the right moves are made, and you can add a few pieces via trades, you could contend in 2011-2012.

i think you are putting too much into faith or hope into Andrews and his scoring abilities. Has he ever put up impressive numbers?

i think you are putting too much into faith or hope into Andrews and his scoring abilities. Has he ever put up impressive numbers? 5pts in 5 games at the U-17 in 2010. Thats somewhat impressive. Been ok in midget. Dont expect him to light up the board every night but 30-40 points isnt asking much. Hopefully thats not too much faith.

i think the Moose will put their best efforts into building a competitive team for next year.... I think some of you will be disappointed by that decision but I don't think Smith wants to ice a losing team 3 years in a row
You have lots of building blocks capable of stepping forward, and you have prime assets in terms of youth and high draft picks available for trade
I don't see you as a league contender next year but I think moves will be made to make you an upper midpack team... not continued rebuilding in the same path some of you would like

I can see them wanting to add a solid 19 year old forward but one that will also be a good 20 year old (their '91 group is small and not filled with 20 year old prospects). I think the big appeal next year would still be one or two good 18 year old forwards that can add to the top six. 18 year olds can be expensive but maybe there's a deal there for a guy like Duffy.

In no way are we a contender NEXT year. I dont think many expect us to be. But we hope to be in the middle of the pack, with the potential to make some noise in playoffs. In two years, we could certainly be with some nice moves to bring in established players. We potentially have Randall 2 more years and will be captain next year. Desjardins was really coming in the 2nd half with the points to go with his usual great effort, and he`s around for 3 more years. Albethauser also has so much potential to be a top guy on D. Andrews will also be 18. Add in the top euro/midget picks who will be 17-18 in 2 years, and things are looking good.
Maybe in 2 year though, we are still upper midpack, in the darkhorse contender category. We should still be en route to being a consistently strong team again, provided they stick with the current plan of building through he draft and being a hardworking team.
Our record sucked this year, but we had many very good games and efforts. I expect to be mid pack next year.

Think we have somewhat of a foundation. I am not saying we are going for the Presidents cup next year. But the magic contender fairy does not just come and hit us with a wand April 2012. Most of the pieces should be in place by mid next year. Guess maybe i should have use a better heading for my post. To me contending is also making it into the play-offs.
