From the Moncton Times&Transcript
A match penalty calls for an automatic minumum one-game suspension, but MacAusland and Piskacek will both play tonight. The QMJHL cancelled their one-game suspension after reviewing video tape.
This ruling is the closest thing to an admission that the officiating is really not very good in the Q.
It is certainly good news for the Eagles.

The league admitted earlier this year that an officiating crew messed up on a call costing Rimouski points in the standings. It's nothing new.

I had forgotten about that admission and there actually may have been 1 other this year but the league has never admitted that the officiating is really not very good.
We have all seen terrible calls in the past where the supposedly injured player who had to be helped off the ice after laying inert for several minutes had enough of a speedy and somewhat miraculous recovery that it enabled him to play about 3 and 1/2 minutes of the 5 minute major and game that was called for kneeing on basically an accidental collision. The Q league even after having the opportunity to watch video of the collision and the miraculous recovery, that clearly showed that the referee was made a fool of, has upheld the penalty and imposed a suspension of several games for that major. I can use the Vincent Zaore suspension after a collision with Lambert (?) of Lewiston as 1 example.
I still think this decision is a step forward for the Q league. A defenceman defending a 1 on 1 rush should be allowed to use a hip check as a defensive play to stop the rush. It is in no way an attempt to injure.
The other check left a lot more doubt regarding intent, because it came after the play was made, deep in the other team's defensive zone and MacAusland clearly bent over and went at the player's lower body. It was in no way a defensive play. However, many fans felt a 5 minute penalty was excessive even then.
How many times this year as well as last year has Jan been given penalties for great hip checks? You would have thought that it would have been addressed by the Eagles a long time ago and clarified by the league to all its officials that the HIP CHECK IS STILL LEGAL.

Finally the Q does something that makes sense. Good move.

The league will never admit that their officiating crews are not very good. They will however admit that the interpretation of rules may get confused.
You have to remember that these officials are humans, they will make mistakes. They need to react to plays that occur at a very fast speed and do not have the luxury of slow motion replays to make calls against.

It is certainly good news for the Eagles. The league didn't rule it wasn't an illegal play. They ruled that match penalty was the wrong call, which is correct because there is no clear "intent to injure" on the play. On the other hand, they could easily give each guy a 5 and a game, which only carries an automatic review (no suspension), still give the guy his Code 4, and still punish him. This is likely what they changed the penalties to, because the hits were dangerous, but not pre-meditated attempts to injure.

I have been reading all the posts on both the Moncton & CB boards and with so much talk about the "match" penalties I decided to finally take a look at the game highlights. Only the CB penalty to see and IMO it was a clean open ice hit. I can't see it called any other way.
