TOLEDO, OH - Jean Claude Sawyer of Saint John was named the top defenceman in the East Coast Hockey League Wednesday after his first campaign with the Toledo Walleye. In 67 regular-season games, Sawyer, 23, picked up 21 goals and added 59 assists. The six-foot-three defenceman, who spent five seasons with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, scored once and added an assist in Toledeo's first playoff game - a 7-2 victory over top-ranked Charlotte Tuesday evening.

A guy with his size and skill, his defensive game must be brutal to still be in the ECHL for a 3rd year.

He was -10 on the team. Given he played most of the games, unlike the high turnover of some of his teammates, pretty safe to say he had the worst +/- on the team. However, excellent offensive output. Congrats!

His defensive game has been spotty at several points in his career, no doubt, but does someone with a brutal defensive game really win Defenceman of the Year? Example - unless shit changes in his defensive game, you'll never see Mike Green win a Norris Trophy, no matter how many points he racks up.

If he's that good I'm confused why he's not in the AHL yet.

I was one of the ones who enjoyed watching JC develop from a raw 16yr old to a star at 19/20...the constant harping on him from the crowd was a bit over the top but it's great to see he's realizing some of the potential seen in him at a young age.
Regardless of the Billy's comments above, it's great to see him win an award like this at any level of pro hockey.

Perhaps I gave a bad example...........haha. Although of course Green was left off the Olympic Team because of his defensive game.
