Fabian Joseph would be a wildly popular choice here, a hometown boy who grew up literally a couple of blocks away from C200 (of course he woulda been a Sydney Forum rink rat, predating the C200!), and who was of course an original Cape Breton Oiler and one of their stars/by far their most popular player in the team's first two seasons. I think he was second or third in team scoring in 1989-90.
The flip side to all of that is, all the hype would come with a lot of pressure. Another former CB Oiler, Bruce Campbell, might be able to attest that it's not always easy coaching in your own backyard.

Gardiner's become close to the Eagles organization, due of course to Taylor playing here the past year and a half and no doubt again next year. If he were ever to make the jump to major junior, I'd be surprised if Cape Breton wasn't at or near the top of his list. However he has such a good thing going at UNB (save last year's playoff faceplant) that I wonder if he has any incentive to change his situation?

And you have to believe he's not going to uproot himself from UNB when Taylor is likely 1 more season away from joining the program.

Especially since he linked a 5yr Deal last year...... Wednesday, August 5, 2009 UNB Re-Signs Coach Gardiner MacDougall Anyone who happened to listen to the local radio on the drive home this afternoon probably caught that Coach Gardiner MacDougall has been locked-up for another five years at UNB. What else can be said? Coach MacDougall has led the program through its most successful period. Along the way "Coach Mac" has picked up two AUS Coach of the Year awards, three AUS Championships, a Gold Medal from the 2007 World University Games, and two National Championships. We look forward to having him back at UNB to add to that total. Congrats to Coach MacDougall. www.unbhockeyfans.com/2009/08/unb-re-signs-coach-gardiner-macdougall.html

So I guess MacDougall is out of the question. Well I suppose Pascal still had time remaining on his contact when he left. I believe we will see what we usually see and Dourocher will get an extension anyways.

I think the Eagles ownership group is waiting to see what kind of backlash there is from all the questionable decisions that were made in the past year. Backlash can take the form of comments made by disgruntled fans to any of the owners or to the Eagles office as well as season ticket sales.
Has anyone heard how renewals are going so far? I have heard that some fans have said that they are waiting to make their decision depending on the coach / gm decision that's made.

Not trying to promote my own work here, just posting this for the sake of keeping this conversation going. I wrote an article on this topic for The Cape Bretoner online magazine - lots of great local news coverage there at thecapebretoner.ca. It's an online version of the old "The Cape Bretoner" magazine that used to be around in I think the 80s and 90s. The new online rendition is aimed at giving Capers living elsewhere all over the world a look at what's going on back home. www.thecapebretoner.ca/?p=2770

With the draft roughly five weeks away it looks like the status quo will remain intack at Eagleland, it is unlikely that major changes are in the works or surely if there were it would have been done quickly at season's end to allow the new people time to set up the draft and possible trades. I would say that Mario is the holder of a three year contract which will ensure him of a pay check until the end of the 1012/13 season.
