i made the trek down to SJ from Fredericton as i normally do for eagles game . i want the money i wasted on the fuel to get there . When Cuzner and MacIntosh are your 2 top players it is going to be a long year, and that is not a knock against them. I think Ellis left for Montreal a day early . The give away on the 1st or 2nd goal was unbelievable. He's supposed to be our best . and Verroneau whether he gets the nod 90 seconds to game time or a week to game time 3 goals on 3 shots (weak shots)i might add,is unacceptable .I know its early and hopefully this won't be the norm all year . Heres to better games ahead Not sure what was so weak about the shots lol ... Ellis gave it away to one of the top players in the league and he buried it with a well placed shot. Granted he was to deep in his net he likely was a little surprised at Ellis handing the puck to Kirkpatrick. Gagne was more of the screen ... not a big shot but not easy to stop what you can't see either. Jurco was all alone in front and he tapped a pass from Phillips in not sure why that would be considered weak lol. If any were weak shots it was Gagne's but the other 2 were good shots ... Not sure if V seen the shot or not hard to tell when you not playing at ice level but looked to me like he was looking at the side of his defender and Gagne shot on the other side.

Third goal he had no chance on, you are correct. Bang-bang play. There was quite a screen on the second goal, but it was stoppable if he was at the top of the crease. The highlights show Verroneau came back with a few nice saves in the third!

those 30 shots at least 25 were garbage , dump ins and such. the only quality shots were the macintosh breakaway in the first , a snap shot from shaw top of the circle in the 2nd . and the goals of course . deer your game summaries are spot on .its too bad you didn't see this one , actually maybe you were spared .

deer, you said, "The thumping is no big deal though, that's expected from time to time with a raw team."
The question, considering St. John was missing 4 players, is how often, especially on the road we might see thumpings like this with this raw team and especially raw defence? There could be many long nights against the elite teams in the Q like St. John.
Future games against Halifax, Moncton and PEI will give us a much better idea of how the team will fair this season. Hopefully, the team will recapture the identity of being a very tough team to play against here in Sydney!

Thanks! Living in NB you probably wouldn't have had the chance to see the game from Halifax on TV. That was highly worthwhile to watch, I enjoyed all 60 minutes as did everyone else I spoke to who tuned in. So while you saw a stinker, maybe there's reason for optimism next time you see the team play. Although they haven't won a game in Saint John since the 09 playoffs.... 0 for their last 5.

Another thing, and I may be way off base on this because I'm not even sure if this info is correct..... but I thought I heard the team bussed from Halifax to Saint John today as opposed to last night. If I'm wrong, my apologies... but if not, maybe bussing on game day wasn't such a good idea? The eagles bus pulled into harbour station shortly after 5pm The team arrived around 5.30 pm in St. John in casual attire, they looked rushed and unorganized, the starting lineup stepped onto the ice one by one during the singing of Oh Canada. The rest was the same, missed passes, giveaways, they were definately unprepaired for this game. Goalie was shell shocked in the first period but regained his focus at the end and made some nice saves. Young teams need more time to get their game heads on. Did the Bus have trouble? This wasn't an Eagles Bus, looked rented. As for Metcalfe, we saw him walking around after the game with a bag of ice on his leg. Ellis left with his family after the game. It is hard to focus on the game, in his defense, when your leaving for a pro camp! A young man's dream.

I agree that there could be a few more 7-2 type losses on the road before this season is over with. But from what I saw on TV Friday, maybe this could be a team that as you suggested recaptures that identity of being very tough to play against at home. For many winters, that identity made going to the rink 35 nights a year a real treat - and if that's what we're in for again this year then I'm looking forward to the season regardless of the final record. Of course we have to see the team play several more times before having any real idea of what their identity will be for the year, but I chose to err on the side of optimism in this post.

Wow - if that's true, hopefully it was because of bus troubles or something beyond anyone's control....... rather than pure lack of foresight or disorganization. A young team in year one of a rebuild has to scratch and claw for every point it can get...... last thing it can afford is to be handing the opposition additional advantages by being unprepared. That's odd - cuz they sure looked ready for the Halifax game.... the rookies looked poised and mentally prepared. You could certainly understand if Ellis had a hard time concentrating this weekend due to the exciting opportunity coming up (not suggesting that that happened!). In fact, with it being so natural to look ahead to the Habs camp, it makes his second-star play (first star in my books for what they're worth) in Halifax even more impressive.

I fully expected this outcome of this game.
Wish I could have watched to see if the Eagles did anything positive in this game.
Nice to see our vets getting off to a solid start.
I think we're going to be pretty horrible on the PK this year.
Overall, still happy with going 1-1 on opening weekend.
