www.capebretonpost.com/Sports/2010-10-20/article-1866431/Horyl-released--by-Eagles/2A couple things that bother me from this....Mario is supposedly having both current goalies and Hayes 'compete' for jobs over the following weeks.... meaning his goaltender of the future may get even less work than before and not sending him down will get him less work. Second...he hopes this move improves the team defensively. HEY MARIO, YOU'RE THE LOWEST SCORING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!! OFFENSE IS YOUR PROBLEM!!!! OH, sorry, he said he'd address offensive issues at Christmas.....

Not to side with Durocher ( a sin on this board) but when offense is your problem the only way you are going to win games is by tightening up defensively
At least give this move a chance before the stoning... it's not a bad ploy

Interesting Stats... 10 teams have GA 50's+, we are 57... GF-33, 2nd worst... bottom third teams all within 4 points of each other... Summary... GA/defensively,reasonable... D zone coverage opportunity to improve... Standing positions 13-18 still wide open within 4 points... Must Finish chances 5 on 5 , PP needs results , Need scoring is what boils down to

You would need more than one addition to your team to change that side of the coin This move has the greatest immediate chance to improve the W-L record and cost you nothing Verroneau wasn't playing anyways and neither was Horyl

Bois - the move seems redundant. Lacerte was already giving us a chance to win in pretty much every game he started. Why try to improve upon our greatest strength when there are gaping holes everywhere else? It's a completely confusing move... might work out, but right now it's completely confusing.

Didn't say it wasn't confusing I haven't seen enough of your games to really gauge Lacerte..... I know he's performed well above expectations thus far, maybe he's due for a come down.... afterall he's never really been a number one guy in the CHL for an extended period has he? Hayes has and maybe he makes that extra save Lacerte doesn't.. maybe he doesn't kick out the juicy rebound in the slot that Lacerte does.... maybe he does.. and if he does you can just drop him at no cost but a sweater plate and a plane ticket I just don't see it as a horrible move..... if Horyl wasn't coming back, appears that was the case, and Hayes was available.. what is the harm? Truly

Truly I don't think anyone really thinks its a horrible move. I completely agree with your logic in the fact that if Hayes doesn't work out, it was a completely low risk pick up. My biggest thing is...why is Mario out looking for goaltending/putting time/effort into it, when we can't put the puck in the net.

Shrewed move... obtained Hayes to move for a scoring 20 ? Can Mario wheel and deal like that? Both goalies solid up and comers, doesn't make sense IMO

1 thing I also haven't noticed anyone bring up is the situation Hayes is now in.
How many overagers make the switch in CHL leagues successfully? I'm sure the guy is skilled, but he's coming into a poor team and causing a chemistry issue regardless of what type of person he is because he's now in the mix of a goaltending combo that's been comfortable in their positions and roles since June.
The expectations are now pretty high that this guy is much better then what we already have and for a goalie switching leagues playing behind a poor team that could be a rough adjustment.
If our hometown guys are losing desire to play here, how long will it take for a kid from out West to lose that desire while he's fighting with 2 incumbents for playing time?

Not to side with Durocher ( a sin on this board) but when offense is your problem the only way you are going to win games is by tightening up defensively Yup ... because any guy that can help CB offensively is already playing Major Jr and not available until Xmas ... or never. You also aren't going to find any Dmen that can jump in and take on a top 4 role. You can try a few Jr A guys ... but to expect an offensive impact is really pushing it. I should add to that ... Teddy Stephens is likely going to be made available to somebody any day now ... he has had a concussion but has started skating with the team again. I'm pretty sure that Durocher and Flynn have discussed this possibility ... but Hayes was free while Stephens is likely going to cost a 2nd to 4th ... and I doubt CB is willing to pay the 2nd or 3rd.

To me the bigger story is Horyl and his health. I fully understand the fact he lost his desire because of the medical issues, but I don't understand at all how those issues go away by not playing here and playing Junior A.....it's still competitive hockey with some level of expectation placed on its players, is it not? Unless there's some no-contact rule I haven't heard about this is still the league where the Gallant's and Bernard's of the Q go and play at 20 so there's no immunity to contact or physical play.

The players are bigger, stronger, faster in the Q ... and they hit harder ... physical conditioning is much higher in the Q ... plus ... travel is longer, more practice time, more games. If he is playing with headaches ... it will be easier for him in Jr A ... less of a demand on him.

Or has he been sitting out simply due to that lack of desire and was given an ultimatum? I'll never debate that the calibre of play is lower but it's still a competitive sport so the injury situation can't be THAT serious or he'd be playing no-contact beer league at CBU.

I got the understanding that he was living with headaches ... something he'll be dealing with for the rest of his life. If it was just lingering concussion symptoms he wouldn't be playing for Truro either. He may decide after a few weeks that he can't hack Jr A either.
