Neil Hodge ?@ttneilhodge · 3m @monctonwildcats Three Americans left Moncton camp today to keep NCAA eligibility: def Luke McInnis and for Brandon Borges and Alex Johnson
Neil Hodge ?@ttneilhodge · 3m @monctonwildcats 37 players now in Moncton camp: 4 goalies, 12 defencemen and 21 forwards. Next cuts on Sunday night.
It's too bad for McInnis...the other two are not big losses...

Big coup getting Murphy to sign, but otherwise not an overly successful year with the American draft picks. Like you said though I'm sure most of them aren't exactly a huge loss.

The losses that can be considered big are the last few years with Matheson Florentiono MacLeod and now McInnis(at least for now) all high end or potential high end guys not coming. If you look at picks in the top 8 rounds this year(rounds you can draft 15 year olds)...McInnis RJ Murphy Koopman and Krys all no shows(for now), that hurts when you have no 1st and not a ton of prospect depth.

I think RJ Murphy was hurt and that's why he didn't show and I don't expect many 6th rounders to make a team in their first training camp anyway. Seems like a Jacob or Cormier situation where neither of them came to camp last year because of injuries. I hope they stay on him though and makes sure he comes next year. I wonder how the team feels about Krys chances of showing up. It is a good sign that as of right now he still does not have a commitment. It will be interesting to see if he wants to play the two years for the US development team or just the one following somewhat in the footsteps of the 4 or 5 defections the team had from the previous year. If he does only play the one year I think it would bode well for Moncton. At this point I don't expect to McInnis here ever. Has anyone heard anything about Koopman at all? Strange since he was likely the lowest rated guy the Cats picked out of the early Americans and I thought for sure he would have shown up. Overall, I think the only loss that hurts is McInnis. It's unlikely that they would have been able to trade any of the Americans anyway for upgrades this year (NTC or just don't have value since it's unknown whether they would show up) and usually guys in the 6th round and later wouldn't hold much value even if they were willing to report anywhere.

I find the best window for convincing US guys to report is at 16 and 17, after that they can play NCAA and rarely go back on their decision unless they flunk out or get kicked out. There are a few exceptions but not a ton. Krys McInnis and Murphy, the next 12 months will be key.

McInnins is going to be a tough one to convince, might be a different story if he was committed to a lower end college.

Mathieu Olivier 7th in 2013 and never underrated a 6th round pick. Mantha was a 5th

Why not draft a 98 from Quebec or Atlantic and draft Koopman next year with a late pick?Overall, I think the only loss that hurts is McInnis. Can't imagine Jacob not making this team. He flies out there.

Can't imagine Jacob not making this team. He flies out there. Not to mention that his father is a scout for the Wildcats, at 144 pounds and his style of play he will get hurt in this league.

Big coup getting Murphy to sign, but otherwise not an overly successful year with the American draft picks. Like you said though I'm sure most of them aren't exactly a huge loss. Big Coup??? Let's wait and see, after all he only had 7 goals in 25 New England Prep games last year his first time playing against olde players. He didn't make the USA 5 Nations team in Germany that McInnis was on and we saw he wasn't ready for Major Junior...

Take into consideration a QMJHL season so we'll say he scores at the same pace as he did in prep school. That will add up to a little more than 21 goals. Again, pretty good for a 16 year old in the Q. Name me the last 16 year old rookie to score 21 goals for the Wildcats.
