Before you roast me for making a game thread a week in advance, I just wanted to let everyone know that the game is sold out. So if you wanted to see Ehlers one last time ( ), and you aren't a season ticket holder and lucky enough to get into the Forum, Wednesday might be your last chance.
Hard to believe the year is over already. The good and the bad IMO:
The good:
- Building for the future: I believe the trades we made and the picks we brought in were an awesome start. Yah we didn't trade everything we could. But the value we got was good. I still can't believe we got a 3rd round pick for Lussier. That player could play with us for 5 seasons. As difficult as it is to say, we have zero secondary scoring, and our offense has struggled without Ciampini and Ryan. But I think if I had to do it over again, I'd still make those trades.
- Ehlers and Meier have been an absolute treat to watch. If Ehlers is gone next year, the entertainment value of the team goes way down. We should appreciate what we've had the last four seasons, because it could be a while before we see it again.
- Our defense has struggled at times, but it's been fun watching them improve over the season. I think they've been getting tired lately, and that combined with Resop struggling has meant some losses. But overall they've improved. I think Taylor Ford has impressed me most consistently.
The bad:
- As mentioned, we had no secondary scoring. I expected more out of pretty much every non-goon forward other than Ehlers, Meier, Gadoury and Danny Moynihan. Fortier, Conner, Shewfelt and Watt all didn't take the step forward I expected from them. Fortier even played 1/2 the season on the top line, and never looked like he belonged. King and Crossley were fine, but their expectations were lower.
It's been a fun year overall. I think someone said it earlier, but if we didn't have Ehlers and Meier, we'd be fighting with Drummondville for the last playoff spot. But we weren't winning any championships this year anyway, so it means higher draft picks, and a higher Euro pick should we choose to use it. The rebuild has begun, and there's going to be some frustrating years going forward. Have to pick out the positives and run with them.
