Maybe someone can shed some light on this.... How is it that recent Seadogs cuts Ian Smallwood and Alex Lafreniere can play for the Telus Cup hosts SJ Vitos this season? Any way Doug D'Arnall, etc. can play for the Flyers?

Just from scanning over their thread it looked like because they are hosting the Telus cup they are allowed up to 5 out of town players? Not too familiar with Midget hockey to be honest though.

Unless they changed the rules, they would have to play MAAA in their hometown.

Being allowed 5 out of town kids is completely false. They would need someone to have full legal custody or legal guardianship

just have to buy a couple more hockey players These players will be playing at the Telus Cup and also given the opportunity to have practice time with the Vito's and Sea Dogs if time permits as well they will have access to the Sea Dogs training facility at Afterburn Performance.

It all sounds rather sketchy to me ... I would not be shocked if Hockey NB ends up having to rule on their eligibility - can't see the other NB Midget AAA teams liking this very much.

They can all to the exact same thing ... As long as they have guardians they can switch leagues not sure why that seems sketchy at all this isn't this first time teams have done this. It's more common with teams when they are hosting the Telus Cup but it happens - I'm sure if they weren't hosting you wouldn't see this sort of thing but as long as they have someone to become their guardians during the season they are keeping within the guidelines.

Can you give an example of when this has happened before in the NB PEI Major Midget league like you said??

I am not sure it is as simple as you make it sound ... I always thought that to move around for minor hockey, either your family had to move prior to a certain date, or someone living in the zone you were moving to had to assume legal guardianship of the player (again prior to a certain date) - this would involve the player's parents actually surrendering their legal guardianship of their son to whomever the new guardian will be - so not a decision to be taken lightly. I know a guy who moved to Ontario to play midget many years ago, to live with an aunt and uncle, and as I understood it, that was the process back then. It may very well have changed since, or I may have misunderstood. The fact that players moving around at the MAAA level happens so infrequently leads me to believe it is easier said than done. Prep schools (RNS, OHA, etc.) that play in prep leagues are not covered by Hockey Canada rules. Not sure how schools like Newbridge and Notre Dame that run MAAA programs get around residency rules. I recall that RNS wanted into the NBPEI league a few years back and the other teams opposed on the grounds that they could recruit players and no one else could. Also, there are exceptions where players get a release to play out of their zone - typically once they have been cut from their local team ... This is most common with goalies - it happened in NB a couple of years ago between Fredericton and Miramichi, can't recall which direction - someone's #3 goalie ended up playing for the other team. Happens in Quebec on a regular basis ... But in this case, we are talking about players who would be stars with their local MAAA teams - not cuts ... It may well all be legit - but I would be surprised if someone doesn't complain (player's former team, rival teams in NBPEI league) and force someone to rule that it is.

Unless they changed the rules, they would have to play MAAA in their hometown. Not really "home town" ... but region. Edmundston players play in Fredericton ... and the Fredericton teams has to billet them. But moving from one Province to another is unheard of.

Actually that year, both of Fredericton's goalies were from outside of Fredericton. Aidan Critchlow (Cameron's brother) was cut from Moncton and made the Fredericton team while Ryan Hale from Miramichi made the team as well.
