They're eligible to trade Blichfield too at the draft so a team with a later euro pick may have some interest if he ranks 3rd on the pecking order for Halifax. Don't think so ... unless this draft is more than 365 days after the last one. Didn't they rule on this in another case and Euros aren't eligible to be traded until after the next draft ? I think the spirit of the no trade rule is so a kid doesn't come here and struggle with the language/culture/billets/hockey and also have to deal with a trade in his first year. I only bring that up because Blichfield might not be eligible for trade until he is in the Q for a year.

Maybe he is still on wavers(see Cats picking up Frolik and Bezak the last few years at midseason) and they can grab him, not sure they can protect him if he doesn't show though... He never signed a player card ... no need to waive him. It is only when 3 are there and all 3 have played a game that you need to trade or waive somebody. You can't have 2 Euros on your roster and a 3rd on your protected list unless...A-the third is 20 years old and goers on a special list. B-is a player that did not show the year before(14-15) and goes on another special list. C-if your 3rd Euro is in the NHL and was a 1st round pick(for example Meier started the year in the NHL like Sprong). If you draft a guy and he does not show, he only goes on a "special list" in June if you didn't acquire/add another Euro.

You'd have to think the Mooseheads will move on from Blichfield and use their pick in the CHL Import Draft in July. No ... he didn't show up so he goes on the special list at the end of the seaso. You should be able to pick a new guy and own 3 ... until all 3 show up and play. Why would they bother doing that? I assume the reason for picking Blichfield initially was because of possibility of Meier graduating to the Sharks. There is no reason for Russell to keep hold of Blichfield when he has Somppi and a new, presumably better, Euro. This isn't exactly a Grigorenko-Kucherov-Sorensen type situation.

Well let's see ... it is an asset wasted if you don't use it. Scenario: Draft a new kid very high ... all 3 come to camp ... trade Somppi for a 2nd or 3rd (maybe more).

For what it is worth Willy has reiterated on twitter that Blichfeld was dropped when Meier came back.

Wasn't there a loophole where the kid sits on waivers and if nobody claims him any team with an opening, including the team that drafted him, could claim him and dress him?
Maybe that's been addressed since but there's been some strange Euro situations over the years.

Probably worth a lot. Willy knows his stuff. So now you are sucking up to Willy? Haha! I did mention one-time that he knows his stuff and that is why it was disappointing that something was restricting him from breaking trades. Make no mistake, Palov is likely one of the best in the QMJHL reporting biz when it comes to knowledge of the league.
