I know the reason and I don't dispute that the reason is fact (embellishment and yapping) ... but that doesn't give the Refs the right to allow checks/punches/sticks to the head of Conor Garland. The Refs must protect the players at all costs ... and their personal issues need to stay out of it ... they are not being impartial if they let their dislike of Conor Garland affect their judgment. I don't mind the non-violent trips and hooks and holds that might go uncalled from time to time ... but it is the violent stuff that must always be called. Even the jab to the face in a scrum should be called every time ... no exceptions ... it is a targeting of the head and that has to be taken out of the game for the safety of the players. Think about it ... if I flip the puck over the glass in my own end it is an automatic 2:00 ... but if I punch an opponent in the head I can get away with it, even though the Ref saw me do it. To me ... 100% of any type of head contact must be called ... especially punches after the whistle. Part of the issue is Garland will sometimes be the aggressor in some of these scrums...so it goes both ways. Like I said earlier, he probably gets a lot more calls without the antics and staying away from scrums/retaliation. Garland is a pure faking machine out there and the refs are starting to see the light with him... it is about time.

It deserved 2 minutes because Garland was without the puck. The elbow might have been a little high; however there was no jumping to the head height by Del Paggio.
If this was a dirty hit, just imagine how the hit to Turcotte should be phrased.

Better quality look at the Will Smith hit. If you watch this video you see him take his shot which I guess hits Turcotte in chest ... you can see the rebound come directly off of Turcotte and forward into the slot. Smith is tracking the rebound and moving across the front of the net to get to it ... all of his weight on his left foot ... and Noel gives him a little shove on the right hip which is enough to throw Smith off of his intended path. If you watch this video at around 22 and 23 seconds ... move through it frame by frame (expanded to full screen) ... you can see what I am talking about. The time frame between the shot and the collision is about a second (when you watch the regular speed clip) ... so not really any time for him to make a decision to run the goaltender after the save was made. He appears to be tracking the rebound ... and gets pushed off his intended path by Noel. Noel is a guy that likes to fight ... and I think he and Smith had a tilt this year in Moncton. Noel makes no move to get at Smith because he knows that he himself is the cause of the collision. If Noel didn't push him then Noel would be the first guy in their yanking Smith off the goalie and throwing bombs at him while he was down on the ice. When I saw this live ... I though Smith did this intentionally and didn't have a problem with the call ... didn't like it but it was what appeared to be the right call at the time. But seeing this now ... I don't think Smith had any intent other than trying to get to the rebound.

Del Paggio never lifted his elbow. If there was head contacts it was because of the size difference in players or ducking from the victim. Del Paggio definitely did not jump up. Disagree on the lifting of an elbow and head contact - in the last video Irving Homie posted, Del Paggio's elbow does lift and separate from his body. Is it from "normal follow through" on a hit? To me it appears no, we've seen hits where players keep their elbows tucked into their body. So it is possible. The Garland hit is clearly a check to the head ... I'd upload an image of it but have it on my PC so no link for it. Edit; figured it out.

When you go to the net you have to expect defenders will try and knock the puck off your stick and cut you off. Smith hit the goalie with wayyyy too much velocity to say he tried to stop. I think he could have limited the contact to just a bump by braking hard, even late.

His eyes are on the puck and his stick reaches for it before he gets knocked off stride. The high speed comes from him having to race Noel to the net ... is he not allowed to do that ? Once Noel knocks him off stride he has no means to brake. Before that he was carving to across the front of the net to his right to get to where the puck was.

When guys hit, they drive up with their legs through the hit, makes the shoulder come up into the jaw/head during and after contact.

I'm not saying he left the ice ... not even calling it an elbow ... just saying it was a hit to the head.

theqmjhl.ca/del-paggio-suspended-3-games/here is the Q's rational on the suspension ... apparently Blade Mann-Dixon was at fault. This shows a different angle that I did not see before ... does show Del Paggio launching upward and leaving his feet ... although he didn't get much air.
