Dubas confirms Babcock will be back . i think this will be his first year with a real hotseat...... if the Leafs struggle this year i bet he gets canned if they have another very good or even great regular season and go out in round one again.... i bet he gets fired

Now with a #1 team and many key parts of a successful team with 2 #1 centers, a dynamic high scoring winger, #1 Dman, and #1 goalie...it's time to raise the expectations and take a big step forward into a contender. Like the cheap veteran FA's they're scooping up to provide the organization some added depth as there's going to be some big changes this summer I think and I wouldn't be shocked to see 1/3 of the roster turned over with Marner and Matthews extensions kicking in.

Interesting blurb in '31 Thoughts' this week regarding Marleau's contract: "Odd quirk in Patrick Marleau’s contract: his signing bonus is paid in two instalments, one in July, one in December. Remember, he controls his future, but that adds a wrinkle to any potential move."
So not quite as easy to trade him somewhere just to be bought out and resigned.

I think Marleau has enough left that it's probably best just to keep him. In a year they will likely need to add his cap room to pay other players anyways, may as well clean up their cap situation now instead of trying to patch it up.

If there's no handshake/agreed upon exit strategy now after year 2 then that was a stupid contract to sign there's not much sugar coating it even though i'm in agreement that the youth needed a leader or 2 in the room they respected. To get out of it the only way it might make financial sense is to have him wanting to retire or at least move on after you tell him he's destined to 4th line/extra duties in all likelihood and find someone with a similar or slightly worse contract that can be bought out. Similar to how moving Clarkson meant finding an uninsured deal for an injured player.

If there's absolutely no trade possibility they don't have much choice. Either way big changes need to be made and now is the time to do it. Kadri, Zaitsev, Brown is over $10 million you free up if you can find a home for all 3. Kadri for futures/picks wouldn't be a bad move as we're going to need more cheap contracts coming through the pipeline. I'd also be looking for a good backup goalie to do more of a 50/30 split of games and get Anderson away from the 60+ starts. Probably will need 6-7 really cheap contracts. Rosen, Sandin, Dermott, Holl, Gauthier, Moore, Petan, Korshkov, Mikheyev all candidates for those 4th line/3rd pairing minutes. Outside of Marner biggest issue with be keeping both Kapanen and Johnsson. A move of one of them for a dman with some term wouldn't shock me unless both take really good deals.

Word out of Toronto is Marner wants 11.6 a year and isn’t budging. Will listen to other teams starting June 26.
Not good

Just listened to an interview with our gm Doogie Howser. He was not ready for this job. He fucked up by bending over for Nylander which is going to cost us Mariner.
Letting Lou go was a huge mistake.

Nylander's contract will look better than Marner's. He'll end up at about 60% the cap hit for 80% of the production.

Unfortunately he’s in way over his head. Back pedaling big time on his Marner comments about signing any offer sheet. If someone offers him 12m a year leafs can’t match . Just when it looked like they were turning the corner were slowing turning back into the laughing stock of the nhl.

Yikes, it cost a 1st round pick to dump Marleau.

Yikes, it cost a 1st round pick to dump Marleau. They are not out of the woods yet. With the cap only at 81.5M, they will need to make other moves or end up with a lot of holes on D. Johnsson and Kapanen will end up a combined 7M or close. Marner around 10.5-11M That puts them at 68M+ 7+11=86M for 19 bodies(12-5-2). They can LTIR Horton but that puts them at zero cap room all year, plus their D has 5 bodies with Zaitsev Dermott and Holl at #3-4-5. Any smart Gm knows they need a top 4 d-man at minimum 5M plus another 3-4M for breathing room. They likely need to move Kadri or Nylander for a d-man...if it's Kadri probably Brown also. Even if you fill out the bottom 3-4 spots at 700-800k, you need 1M for injury call ups. They could dangle a pick for somebody to take Horton...possibly a 2nd.
