Coming in around Tavares is more likely. If he wins the Hart or scores 50 goals then yeah he's going to be in McDavid territory. But that's where he should be if he produces to a McDavid level.

One major difference with Tavares is that he will be 22 and Tavares 28 when their deal starts. You're signing a guy for 7-8 prime years, Tavares' is less likely to be in his prime at 32-35 than Matthews at 28-30. Matthews production his first 2 years(74-58-132 in 144 games) surpasses Tavares(53-68-121 in 161 games), plus Tavares took a home town discount, he could have gotten 12-13M over 7 years on the open market. If I'm AM's agent I think McDavid Money is what I aim for...maybe it ends up at 11.8-12M AAV but higher than 11M unless he takes a discount.

I think he'll end up in 40 goal 90 point territory and sign for something between 11 and 11.5 on an 8 year extension. If he hits 50 goals or 100 points...then 12-12.5 is possible. Don't think he gets above 12.5 without a Hart or a Cup. McDavid won the Hart and 2 playoff rounds when he signed his extension.

We can pay him 12.5 a year no issues. We have so much cap room. Our gm is a genius he will make it work.

Do you think they'll be able to hang on to Nylander when the time comes? I think they should try and ship him out for a quality defencemen.

Do you think they'll be able to hang on to Nylander when the time comes? I think they should try and ship him out for a quality defencemen. Well...right now could be that time...Nylander is RFA needing a new deal. And no reason to think he couldn't be signed for a long term deal right now. There's cap space there giving them many options at the moment. In terms of trading him...you need to get fair value in return...how many teams trade a guy with back to back 60 point seasons to start a career and get fair value in return? You can't just say "move him for a top guy" you need a top guy with a name to trade him for. I just don't see where a match is in a fair deal right now. Quality defencemen are not usually moved for wingers. And there's no reason to move anyone just to move them. Edmonton made the mistake of moving Hall for Larsson. Nobody is rushing to repeat a move like that. And what else are you getting but a 2nd pairing guy with potential for a young winger like Nylander? I'd rather keep the still developing Nylander. If a sure thing becomes available I doubt anyone can match the package we could offer if we wanted to make a move as long as we keep everyone and stay patient.

Our defense is one of the most soild in the league Can you manage to string together a competent thought that's longer then 1 sentence? Nobody can compete with us . So deep at all levels . So much cap room. Good chance we sign sequin next summer after we win the cup this year. Anyone heading up to the home opener?

Replacing JVR with Tavares brings the Leafs closer to the top. Nowhere near unbeatable as you claim.
