Just browsing some stats today and checking on a hockey pool i'm in where you have to pick one player per each team in the NHL..... noticed that Frans Nielsen of Detroit has yet to register even a single point.... thought well he's getting old must be nearing end of his deal so went to cap friendly.... nope he's got 2 more years left after this one at 5.25 mil per...... checked to see if he's just been hurt or buried on the 4th line or something ... nope still getting 13 minutes of ice per night.... even the last few years his numbers had dropped substantially but this is unbelievable.... esppecially since you're not gonna get any physical play from him
make an argument for someone whose contract is worse.... i'm listening
p.s. he also has a 10 team no trade list to the end of his deal ..... not that you could likely trade him anyhow

I’d be inclined to say that Karl Alzner or Andrew Ladd’s contracts are worse then Nielsen’s.. those 2 aren’t even in the NHL anymore. It definitely shows the balancing act a player needs to look at before inking a deal that may be over their level of play. If they were million dollar players, I bet they still have a home but not at their current price point.

I'd say Seabrook is the worst. He's still on the books for 4 more seasons after this. The Blackhawks have a pretty good core group of young players and if they the cap space they might be real dangerous. Hindsight is 20/20 but letting Seabrook walk, and signing Panarin to an extension would obviously have been better.

The one deal that stands out to me as an albatross right now is Hayes, it looked bad the day it was signed. 7 years at 50M.
Others that are really bad…Eriksson 2 years left at 6M, Schneider 2 more at 6M, Turris with 4 more years at 6M looks bad as a #3 C. Okposo, 3 more years at 6M, Ladd 3 more years at 5.5M, Lucic 3 more years at 6M. Backes 1 more year at 6M.

I think Alzner burried at 3.55M for 2 more years hurts less than a guy giving you nothing with 2 more years at 5.25M Same with Seabrook has 4 more years at almost 6.9M, he’s already a fringe roster player who is sometimes a healthy scratch, it won’t get better. Alzner makes the top 10 but there are at least 6-7 worse contracts.

I think anytime you have to banish a player to the AHL because their contract is so bad (combined with their play), I think it has to be considered as one of the worst contracts or at least can be in the discussion.

Most of the guys on the list could/should be in the AHL or are darn close to it. Some teams chose to do it, others keep them in the NHL to save face.

The Athletic did an article yesterday on the horrible contracts handed out to UFA's in 2016. If there's a league's worst contract, it's on this list. Attachments:

Ouch ... there are a few GMs who deserve to be unemployed or living a second life as a TV analyst after agreeing to those contracts... Its like when making those contracts they sat on the couch watching SN or TSN analysts and bought into how great these players were and rushed out and signed them. This list looks like one of those lists of all the top names that were free agents that July and the agents got them paid. Andrew Ladd/Louie Eriksson --- well that's what people thought in June 2016. There is a herd mentality of overating guys. From the same people who when making their prediction at start of season just list same top teams in order top to bottom. People forget things change and sometimes very quickly.
