The obsessions are mostly built off gambling and the old school ties to physical play and the entertainment that comes with all that. The stuff people say taking out of hockey has changed the game...a lot of it still exists in football. NFL is by far the best sport to wager on. The nature of most games happening at 1/4pm est on Sunday means you have a full slate of games to pick from. Fantasy Football is like the #1 fantasy sport to play. Again...tied to gambling. But becoming a larger part of office culture especially in Canada. And to be fair...Can't I name Theo Fleury, Sheldon Kennedy, and Kyle Beach and say hockey has some pretty vile humans attached to it as well? Every sport does it you dig deep enough. sure you can and sure they do but to me football stands out way ahead of the other major sports when it comes to this kinda stuff..... and as i said it's often well known players involved..... stars if you will and yeah i get the gambling and fantasy aspect...... but i still don't get the appeal of the game itself..... surely it's more than ability to gamble that drives it and why as Canadians do we care so little about our own league relatively speaking? Our own league is the minor leagues. Its like asking why the AHL or AAA baseball doesnt have more of a following. Compared to other "non-major leagues" the CFL actually does quite well. But its a regional thing where in the Prairies they love it and in major centers you need to win to draw a crowd. But if you are going to ask why someone like me who loves the NFL doesn't follow the CFL and my logic would be many factors. A big one being that the talent pool for football is shallow. After the top 10-15 players at each position the sport really levels out so whats left for the CFL to pick through is players with a lot of flaws. And thats after a 53 man NFL roster and a practice squad for each team. The idea around Sunday being the day you can catch a majority of teams play their 1 game that week helps as well. The schedule certainly helps to follow it a bit better. Within my social circle its easier to organize a Sunday afternoon with a few guys then most other days so since a lot of us watch football there's usually somewhere to go for a few hours if you want to socialize and still make it home at a reasonable time for a Sunday dinner with family. But everyone will have their own logic. I've always enjoyed pro line and getting a few tickets on a Sunday and the fantasy aspect. The gambling tie in is a big one for a lot of people. I wouldn't watch as much NFL without the gambling aspect for sure.

The thing I find appealing in terms of NFL football is the in game strategy even from play to play. You obviously have talent on both sides of the ball that impacts every play, but also the sequence of plays, structures of systems and the pause between plays allows for analysis. Baseball used to be like that, now it's just grinding one AB after the other, with a lot less strategy, little bunting or starting the runners. Another big factor that you kind of touched on in referencing style: The NFL has become a pretty wide open game. Lots of big passes and points scored. The rules allowing talent to shine helps draw fans in. If we woke up tomorrow and the NHL was the 1980's version I honestly think it would captivate the entire continent. McDavid scoring 80 goals and 200 points. Tom Brady broke a passing record this year. Owned by Drew Brees who retired last year. The top NFL passers in terms of stats have mostly all played in the last 25 years. We're 20+ years removed from the top NHL scorer playing a game and the final era he played in was almost unwatchable.

Yup, and a lot of that stems from former grinders and goons running the NHL player ops, that's why guys head hunting can injure 3 guys before they get any kind of serious suspension. Those guys also impact how the game is reffed. There is nothing wrong with physical play, the NFL game still sees a lot of big hits despite scoring being up, but you don't see receivers laid out every time they go for a catch in the middle. The NHL would not be devoid of physical play if they protected their stars a lot more.

Everyone in The Packers Organization except maybe some of his closest friends on the Team .........are praying that Jordan Love lights it up against the Chiefs . I bet wherever he gets picked up, it will be a cheap contract, he will have an exemplary attitude and another team gets duped into big $$$.

That is why they say "Any Given Sunday"
Jaguars upset the Bills Broncos beat the Cowboys on the road Giants beat the Raiders, got some nice pics from my daughter who was there at Metlife.
My Pats won again and are only a half game back of the Bills in the AFC East after beating Carolina and made Darnold look really bad again.

I think part of it is roster size, when you have 53 to 70 players under contract per team and 32 teams, that's 1600+ players while the NHL has about 700, MLB about 800 and NBA under 400. The other part is a lot of NFL guys come from poor, inner city backgrounds and had very little money as kids, you give them million dollar contracts and not all of them will react the right way. The number of games in a season is also in play. MLB are playing almost everyday and so they don't have much time to themselves to find trouble ... other than the off-season of course. NHL and NBA play 3 to 4 times per week ... but the NFL plays once per week and they get a week off in there also... Lots of time between games to find some trouble. But the NHL has had their problems as well ... Danny Heatley is just like Ruggs ... Craig MacTavish did prison time (as will Ruggs I expect) for killing somebody while driving intoxicated. I have often wondered if the problems come from a lack of internal team leadership. Older Guys that take the time to guide the younger guys that suddenly have all this money. Hockey has always stressed leadership, and young guys have lived with older guys in a lot of cases. is that happening in the NFL ?

Q Officiating looks really good compared to the NFL . The Fallout of the Steelers-Bears Game last night is all over Sports Radio this Morning . Phantom Penalties .....Defying Video Evidence , one set of Rules for a Veteran QB .......another for a Rookie QB and an Official Hip Checking a Player ? .........In New York on WFAN ...they made "mild" overtones about Gambling Influence on the Game .
