When I was just a young fellow (many many moons ago) Gordie Howe held just about every NHL record imaginable - most of which people at the time said they would never be broken. yet another one will be broken tonight when Patrick Marleau plays in his 1,768th career game. www.tsn.ca/patrick-marleau-set-to-break-gordie-howe-s-record-for-most-nhl-games-played-1.1625912Here is a list of the records that he still holds; First all-time in games played with one team (1,687 with Detroit) With his son Mark, most points for a father and son duo (2,592) Tied for first with Chris Chelios in total NHL seasons played (26) First in total NHL and WHA combined seasons played (32) Most career NHL goals scored by a right wing (801) Most consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals (22) Oldest player in NHL history (52 years old in 1979-80) Most All-Star appearances (23) Most points with one franchise (1,789 with Detroit) Most goals with one franchise (786 with Detroit) First in era-adjusted goals (925) First in Red Wings history in point shares (215)

Impressive that Marleau has been so healthy to get so many GP. But I almost feel like it's still not even comparable to Mr. Hockey.
Gordie Howe's last 80 NHL GP came 8 full seasons from his 2nd last NHL season.
Howe also played 419 games in the WHA.
But the biggest thing for me: Gordie Howe in his final NHL season...in his 50's...was over .5ppg.
Marleau has been hanging on the last 2 years just getting GP to get the record. But he's been barely an NHL caliber player since the 2nd half of his last season in Toronto. So in a way that kind of cheapens it slightly for me. Great for him to have the longevity and health and reputation as someone teams wanted around at the end of his career.
But I think this is one where I think many will always consider Mr Hockey as Mr Games Played due to the WHA time.

Marleau reminds me of Chelios, a guy that is well past his prime but just wants to keep being an NHL. Chelios played until he was 48 but was mostly AHL his last year and had no points in his last 35 games, in his prime he was a 0.8 PPGM d-man.

Obviously don't see much of Marleau these days and sure his stats are not great anymore and havent been for some time but that shouldnt mean he is hanging on and not an nhl calibre player..... he's not doing anything that Joe Thornton or many other vets aren't doing..... he wants to play and is willing to do so cheap... if teams still find any value in that who cares?
I agree tho it isn't the same as Howe playing in mostly a 6 team league...... no chance guys like Marleau still are playing if the NHl is like 21 teams instead of soon to be 32....
but you don't think Howe held on at the end for something beyond hockey? He wanted to play in his 50's.... he wanted to play professionally with his kids..... he wasn't still playing because he was top line superstar
anyways congrats to Marleau.... he will set the record.... but he will never be Mr Hockey

I think Howe's final season was considered his most statistically productive which is quite impressive. I could be wrong without looking it up.
Another cool Mr. Hockey tidbit...Bobby Orr was born during Gordie Howe's 2nd NHL season. By the time Howe retired, Bobby Orr was already in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Obviously this is unique due to Orr's career being cut, but impressive nonetheless.

the thing is Marleau can still skate
very emotional he was.... rumours are he wants to keep going so that would suggest he's not just lookin to set the record here...
i found it rather ironic that Messier came up 11 games short..... he wore number 11.... i dont remember but is that just an odd coincidence?
