I believe there was a Brady card that just recently sold for several million. This was after he announced his retirement so likely won't be the best time to try and purchase any of his cards. Ovechkin cards have been really jumping up in value, however, now might still be a good time to grab some as it will only increase if/when he beats Gretzky's goal scoring record. Even Crosby's cup rookie has been selling in the 6 figure range. depending on the patch.
Ever since Covid hit, cards in all sports have been sky rocketing.

Yep its getting back to being a more popular hobby. From the little bit of research i've done into it the real value for an adult looking to it as an investment is to purchase by the box to guarantee yourself some inserts. But I tried picking it back up as a hobby recently and would buy 3-4 different packs on pay day and the overall look of even basic cards are very nice compared to the 90's versions many of us have seen over the years. But I quickly realized buying say 1 box every 2-3 months is probably a better idea and hope to do that soon. Great thing to get kids into as well if they're at all interested in playing/watching certain sports.

High Button Sports had a podcast last month with Brad Hartlin about card collecting/investing. It was very informative for someone like me who's not 'into' the hobby/industry.

I was big into card collecting when I was younger, mostly just hockey cards and I have amassed quite a collection. I cherish them but probably won’t ever sell them due to the memories surrounding them… even though some of the prices on the cards has sky rocketed to a point where I’ve considered it. They make some really beautiful cards and I’d almost always get a box for Christmas, my birthday, etc… then buy god knows how many with my friends and as a hobby. I’d love to get back into it but it’s gotten a lot more expensive then I remember and the explosion in card value hasn’t helped the price of boxes. You used to be able to pick up some older stock from places that still had them for relatively cheap but since the hobbies picked back up, the prices on those boxes has exploded too. There’ll come a day where I get back into it, hopefully sooner rather then later. I can’t begin to count the number of times I was driven to the card store and we’d open packs, buy boxes and have a great time. My parents were never bothered by how I was “wasting” my money on it either, they saw how well I took care of the cards and the enjoyment it brought. I love seeing younger kids get into it.

When you consider how kids spend their time now I think anything that gets them out of a screen and touching/feeling/reading things is beneficial. Looking back as a kid...the hockey cards I collected really did teach me a lot of lessons around taking care of things and learning how to place a proper value on things. I also liked reading and understanding the stats which as a hockey fan meant I was also learning soft skills such as how to say names properly and how to do some basic math (G+A=P, SA/GA=Save% kinds of things) which absolutely made my parents life easier going through elementary school as I was a bit ahead of the curve on some of those things.

Watched most of this last night. What a great conversation and discussion around the boom and bust periods the industry has seen lately. I knew it had come back as a hobby but never realized the Wal Mart boxes were getting the value they were and how the grading aspect has completely gone through the roof as everyone looks to have all their oldies graded.

I would have kept 7 inning DH, it helps not burn out pitching staffs. I hate the shift rules, it's like a rule in football where you can't blitz or have 2 deep safeties. Let hitters adjust to 3 infielders on one side by hitting the other way FFS. Should be an interesting week with a bunch of FA and unsigned players. Having the soft cap at 230M will help big market clubs.

So hitters still go for their strength and pull into the shift in hopes they get something to hit over everyone. Because pitching wise with so many hard throwers there's little reaction time to make any adjustments. Banning the shift should at least allow for more .300+ batting averages and hopefully start getting more runners on bases which should allow for more speed and in game excitement beyond a HR or a K. I sure hope so anyway.

Isn't there also something about larger bases?

Isn't there also something about larger bases? I think so, they want to avoid injuries and are supposed to have bigger bases.

Isn't there also something about larger bases? I never understood why MLB never had the larger softball style bases at 1st to avoid injuries. I can see something like that saving a lot of ankle/foot injuries over time. It changes nothing about the overall play that I can see.

Yeah, too many collisions and jammed feet, it wouldn't completely fix the 1B coming into the baseline but it would give the runner a clear lane on close plays.
