I just want to explain a bit about analytics if its OK.
I've painted myself with the analytics brush and I really wish I wouldn't have done that. I'm actually not a big analytics buff at all. I rarely even go check them out.
Last year, I was given the use of an analytics account to use as I saw fit. It really didn't interest me much and still doesn't. I used them to try to do a bit of U18 scouting to measure things like who the coaches turned to the most often on their own teams - because coaches know their players best.
Anyway - when I did that - a few analytic categories began to stand out when it came to things like character, heart and 200 foot game - and it started to tell me what players showed up in their teams' losses.
We've never had a way to measure things like character and heart in Junior hockey before but now we arguably do - and that's why I started to retrieve those few numbers after games. There are more than 20,000 individual analytics available with each game - and I use 7 or 8.
When I started posting here - I thought that a few diehard fans might like to know things like that - which players showed up. I thought I was doing a good thing.
When the Halifax Mooseheads lose - you'll see Stephen Davis' name often - shot blocks - puck battles - takeaways - hits and so on.
When I used game analytics the very first time here after a game - it was in the Sea Dogs' first game back - a 4-0 win. I did a short game recap and mentioned that I thought Villeneuve had a strong game. Somebody else jumped in and commented that they agreed with everything - except for Villeneuve - who was his usual error prone self. Then when the analytics came out two days later - it showed Villeneuve leading all players in time on ice, takeaways, plus/minus and I forget what else. That still doesn't mean Villeneuve had a great game, but still - it showed a way to measure a few elements of how he played.
On another occasion, Brady Burns was really being given the business here on the forum - but analytics showed that he's out there blocking shots - going hard to the net - digging pucks out and creating scoring chances - and so on.
Again though - I'm not at all big on analytics and never will be. I didn't mean to come off as shoving them down peoples' throats or trying to take over the board with analytics - and I apologize for coming across that way.
To be honest - I haven't looked at analytics for more than a week. It actually sickened me to get into arguments over something I don't really care that much about. Like somebody said - they are just a tool - not an end-all, be-all to tell the story of a game or season. I'm sorry to those I offended.
I've given my life to Junior hockey. I'm nothing special and definitely not any smarter or any better of a fan than anybody else. If I could turn back the clock 50 years and could only pick one sport - NFL - MLB - NBA - NHL - and any level of any sport - I'd pick Junior hockey all over again.
I'm not looking for any special treatment. We all pick the wrong words sometimes or come off the wrong way in our posting - but I'm not stupid and I'm not an idiot - and my skin isn't any thinner than anybody else's. I just don't think that anybody on this forum needs to go down that path - including myself.
I apologize for pushing the analytics.
