Attendance definitely seems to be lacking. That could completely change today though with Canada's first game. There's no way that there was 1000+ fans at the USA/Germany game. Definitely a bad sign for the tournament to start it off with that few fans. It is junior hockey played at a neutral site location in the middle of summer. Even in Canada a junior game between 2 random countries who are not Canada isnt going to sell well in that situation. The lack of sponsors will hurt their revenue but I doubt they were counting on a lot of fans for this for non-Canada games.

It is a perfect storm for poor crowds ... makeup event lacking some of the top stars, mid-August when people are not in hockey mode, and of course, Hockey Canada not being too popular these days ... makes it very easy for fans to tune out. I am sure the TV ratings will be terrible as well. Will be interesting to see if the December tournament bounces back to normal, or if the Hockey Canada scandal continues to drag it down as well.

There's also very little marketing. I watch almost nothing on TSN right now so I didnt even know it started yesterday. I see a lot of people on twitter saying similar...even people in Alberta who had no idea games had started as there's no hype around it. I think there will be a bounce back for the December tournament but overall interest will still be down a bit. Missing Russia and all the top players doesnt help this tournament at all. That will be felt less in December but could help explain if crowds in Moncton are lower than expected assuming they would have been in the other pool. The only B pool game that registered at all here 20 years ago was USA vs Russia. Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia dont draw interest in the same way. That will be a harder sell if Canada and USA and both in the Halifax pool.

Flailing WJC tournament made the NY Times. I think it's more the fact it's in August and it's missing a big draw team with Russia (rightfully so). With the negative culture sports can have, I really don't think the blame is on the scandals alone, though it doesn't help. A lot of people are more than happy to look the other way or say "she was asking for it".

This sponsor thing would also hurt the December showing. These sponsors do some heavy lifting and now we see it. Now I think the WJC will be a big local event in Halifax but this year may be an afterthought in other parts of Canada. The hard core people will watch but there will not be a buzz for a month before and after. The biggest issue dogging Hockey Canada right now is A list sponsors not wanting to touch them.

The issue is, they are traying to "move on" before actually cleaning their mess. Fire those that allowed this and hire new people to create a better culture.

A friend of mine lives in Edmonton, loves hockey, she's as big of a fan as you'll meet; and she had no idea the tournament was going on until I actually mentioned it. And it's happening in her city. On a side note, huge congrats to Latvia on getting their first ever World Junior win and quarterfinal berth. I'd say it won't be long before we start seeing Latvia be a bigger threat in these tournaments, especially with how popular it's becoming there.
