Jeff Marek just suggested on 32 Thoughts that the 2023 world juniors could be headed to the Maritime’s … joint Halifax/Moncton bid???

I believe there was a report earlier in the year that Halifax was gearing up a bid again… haven’t heard much of anything about it since then though. Would be nice to see it around again but would be priced so ridiculously that I don’t know what market it appeals to either.

I don't see Hockey Canada picking Halifax this year unless something significant happens with Covid and restrictions are guaranteed not to happen. They just moved a couple hockey tournaments out of the Maritimes for fear of restrictions returning. I think Halifax will bid, but I don't think they'll get the tournament until 2025.

Well Halifax & Moncton can certainly bid.
It appears QC/Ottawa will bid.
So 2023 is that the one that starts this December? Or the one that is Dec 2023-Jan 2024?
I have lost track. These decisions used to be decided over a year and half before. And on that rotation where it went overseas every 3rd year.
I guess the covid landscape changed tournament bid windows too. It has been subject to last minute revision with shorter window to phck drop.

I've long been of the mind that World Juniors would benefit from getting back to its roots by going to junior hockey markets. I have no doubt if Moncton / Halifax put on a bid it would be a tremendous event. There is no shortage of volunteers in the local hockey communities to make it happen. Plus we get the inevitable Moncton/Halifax rivalry discourse on who deserves to host the finals . I'm not sure I really understand the Quebec City / Ottawa bid assuming that implies you are using both NHL buildings. It would make more sense to me if they had seperate bids. You really don't need to be having so many of the non canada games in NHL sized buildings. Put Canada's division at the Videotron Centre (plus the medal round) and the rest at a nearby Q rink. Ottawa doing a joint bid with Gatineau would make a lot more sense with their new venue as a secondary.

I don't think you would see the same interest level (especially at obscene prices) for non-Canada games in Halifax like we saw in 2003. The excitement level just wouldn't be the same for this event as it was back then. People wanted to absorb every minute of it back then. I have no doubt Canada games would sell out of course, and the medal round games probably.

Ottawa doing a joint bid with Gatineau would make a lot more sense with their new venue as a secondary. The only thing about having one city host (Or cities as close as Ottawa/Gatineau) is that you're stretching the fan base pretty thin. Some people in the NCR (National Capital Region) would get ticket packages for either group, but not for both. Having the event in two cities would ensure maximum ticket sales in my opinion. Some games overlap as well so getting tickets to both wouldn't be possible. I do question whether or not Ottawa would get behind attending games in the division Canada is not in. When the event was in Toronto and Montreal, they took turns hosting the other group, and the city that hosted the other group also hosted the medal round. That worked because the 2015 and 2017 tournaments were scheduled in advance. I highly doubt Quebec and Ottawa will host two straight tournaments held in Canada. In the 2008 World Hockey Championships, Halifax hosted Canada's round robin games + the quarter final. Quebec City hosted the other divisions and the medal round. Even though Quebec was the bigger city with the bigger rink, Hockey Canada thought the tournament would do better with the smaller city and rink hosting some Canada games. I wonder if there would be a similar thought process with a Halifax / Moncton joint bid.

I still think cancelling the womens worlds and being a region not shy to lockdown will hurt the bid.
Our politicians seem willing to lock their workplace down after exposure but when (not if) the next wave hits we'll see how we react.
I cant see us not falling back to some restrictions even if we dont enter another lockdown.

Are we still expecting a decision on the host this week? Chris Johnston reported last night that Halifax/Moncton has emerged as the front runner, Hockey Canada meeting again today, not clear when decision will be made but expected soon.
