Are we still expecting a decision on the host this week? Chris Johnston reported last night that Halifax/Moncton has emerged as the front runner, Hockey Canada meeting again today, not clear when decision will be made but expected soon. That would be really cool.

But didnt many tell us how NS Premiers and their lockdowns and the Womens Worlds fiasco would keep everything like that out of NS for the foreseeable future? Just being in the running this quickly afterwards shows that was never really the case. Especially when there's absolutely more money to be made in other markets. But it will feel more like a traditional WJHC being in smaller rinks.

My first thought would be "This is great!". My 2nd thought would be that it would be utterly embarrassing for Halifax if they didn't sell out every Canada game because the tickets started at $160 a piece.

My first thought was "Wont be able to afford that ticket package" But I dont think not selling out at sky high prices is embarrassing. The way things are done now they'd rather 7000 pay the higher price vs 10,500 at a lower price even if it means more revenue. I feel as a country we're past the "its embarrassing if we don't sell this out" in regards to the WJHC. We've been completely over saturated with it as a country and I think a little apathy is even setting in about the overall tournament...still has everyones attention for the gold medal game and big Canada games but I think we're kind of coming out of the "golden era" of the WJHC of the last 25 years or so. Add in a pandemic and record inflation, home prices, interest rate hikes...and I can see many reasons why this won't sell like it did in 2003.

Moncton probably isn't getting any Canada games and they aren't going to price non-Canada games differently so if tickets are say $150 each to see USA-Russia they're also going to be $150 to see Latvia vs. Germany. I've been to the World Juniors, got suckered into the tournament package before and I don't regret it but I'm not optimistic that they'll be able to lure me in again. The odds are probably higher that I get a package in Halifax than Moncton to be honest.

I'm sure they'll tie a pre-tourney Canada game into the package to entice people but Moncton would be getting a lot of games that 99% of the market will have zero interest in.

I wouldn't call it so much apathy, but I would agree that the excitement level for this tournament has somewhat peaked. It might just be my age and the fact that most of my friends have kids, but we used to get together to watch every Canada game at the world jrs. Don't do that anymore. The 2023 tournament also has the disadvantage that it will be held only a few months after the 2022 tournament. I wonder if that has anything to do with Hockey Canada seemingly being ok with hosting the 2023 tournament in a much smaller venue like London or Halifax. Will also have a disadvantage of not having Russia at the event, so less marquee games to attend. Edit: Should mention as well I agree with your comment on the pricing. Technically you leave money on the table if you sell out every game. You make more money charging more and having seats empty, even considering beer and popcorn sales.

I figure Canada tickets will be next to impossible to get, so me and my girlfriend are gonna try for Finland or Czechia games.

Any good hotels nearby both rinks with good prices? Taking the trip with my girlfriend, we may do the full day of games and do a bit of shopping the next. Don't really like the idea of driving home at night in winter when I'm not overly experienced with away from PEI driving.
