They might as well just Simulcast the American broadcasts as I'll be someone definitely just watching more of them next season.
They've ruined HNIC from what it was. The coach's corner model could have still worked with a new personality....now the panel setup is garbage without a hot topic to keep people engaged.
The old hot stove with 3-4 different talking heads talking rumors/news wasnt broken...but now its just a spot to push Friedman as their ultimate insider but for me there's a feeling of something lacking with it.
And the gambling stuff....as someone who will admit to enjoying gambling....its so awkward, out of place, and not relevant to the audience at all that its become harder to watch every time its forced down out throats.

This one bugs me the most. I worked at a convenience store where naturally lotto tickets of all sorts get sold. I saw firsthand the damage gambling can cause to vulnerable addicts. I can't imagine hockey is something that they can really watch anymore without getting that gambling itch. And they made it so much easier for addicts to get their fix. It's sad to see.

May be just me but I don't watch for any of these thrills and personal interest stories. I find I do like the between period discussion roundtables.
Roger's has done better going with less in more each time they have. When they first got the NHL contract they had 10 personalities and it was awful. Exactly like what ESPN did with Monday Night Football...they started becoming entertainers and I don't need that.

The round tables worked when there was something interesting/controversial to discuss as people like Bieksa were almost able to come out of their shell a bit. But a lot of the time I found it to be a bit stale. Its also frustrating to me to see how much Rogers spent only to see a panel with Bieksa, Botterill, Friedman, MacLean, etc while the American broadcasts had people like Gretzky, Messier, Chelios, Tocchet, Bissonnette. Minus Cuthbert i'd also mostly take the American pbp guys over HNIC as well.

Bieksa was great when he started but McLean is such a clown he drags the other guys/gals off point. Tryst to entertain. When it becomes all about acting its awful. The American coverage I watched some games in round 1 was all show. Depending who was on but they made Gretzky look awful. I rather have no intermission than watch any of that.

I'm a Caps fan, but any time they play a Canadian team, I almost always opt for the American broadcast. Though I usually have to do that anyway for blackout games.

The sports gambling thing is way over the top now. I love to do pools, DFS and buy occasionally lotto tickets, but I can control myself and quit cold turkey without an issue. Others are susceptible to addiction, and shouldn't be gambling at all. To act like sports gambling even WHILE THE GAME IS GOING ON is something fun and low risk feels really icky. At the very least the ads/promos for it should have the people give a warning about addiction and finances every time. I want it all to be available and legal, but not mainstream promotion of it. It's like putting cigarette ads on TV, where people in their 20's promote how awesome it is lol.

The Canadian coverage is trying to be what both US networks are doing combined but it can't work like that.
TNT is about entertainment and that intermission is about education and entertainment as they introduce it to new fans and it's more like TNT's basketball coverage (which is successful). The TNT production was good and light hearted.
For someone who said "they made Gretzky look bad." I have a complete different perspective, they made Gretzky relatable and he has a wicked sense of humor that was surprising. I didn't know how he would do but he gave more than he took. This panel is about 4 guys joking around enjoying the games and being knowledgable about the games but not being too serious...I mean Biz got his hair shaved during one of the BOA pre-game shows and then did the rest of the playoffs with it shaved.
Contrast to ESPN, which is all about the sports. Messier and Chelios are to the point and it's less flash and more straight hockey talk. This works because ESPN the sports channel.
HNIC was trying to be both and it failed. I prefer the US broadcasts for intermissions and post game (but prefer Canadian play by play teams**). My ** is that the Stars play by play team is one of the best in the game and Razor should be working national games as he use to.

I reached out to my local MP and I suggest others do to to have regulations put in place on lottery/gambling advertising. Lotto Max is by far the worst one for making it sound like a realistic way to change your life for the better. If there's enough of a push, you may see change happen. They made changes to alcohol advertising (for the most part) and you don't see advertising glorifying smoking like we did decades ago.

Same situation for me but I find the Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa bdcst when playing Washington better. Any other national bdcst like HNIC is worse.

True, the more localized broadcasts can be great. I love Joe Beninati, Craig Laughlin, and Alan May for the Caps. I find they do a really good job with their commentary without being too biased, and they aren't afraid to compliment the opposing teams for their good play too. Now the NESN broadcast...well...I'd honestly rather go deaf.

It's like putting cigarette ads on TV, where people in their 20's promote how awesome it is lol. If they had say a 30-60 minute program focused on betting (whats sportsrage was on The Score) I'd be all over it. Break down the nights board and some stats pointing to trends. I'm a single game or maybe 2-3 game parlay type of bettor but I'm also talking low key $5-$20 max type of stuff. This 1st intermission "here are very random live betting odds" is literally like having a free bar at an AA meeting for gambling addicts during a sports broadcast. There might be nothing more volatile in gambling than live betting whats going to happen next. So to push people into those types of odds is just bad television and really makes me wonder why we can't advertise tobacco products if we're going to be this open to gambling knowing the harm addiction can have on society...especially now when its quite easy to sign up on 100 different sites and share your credit card and not realize now sketchy some companies are with data privacy. Might as well have the guys pushing the gambling smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack Daniels in terms of what the damage is going to be on society as we allow this to become common place. I have no children. If I did...they would not be watching a Canadian hockey broadcast because of the gambling angle.

I mean, it's entertaining in the sense that it's a scrawny nerdy guy talking tough behind a microphone. I would pay good money to watch him say the crap he does right to a player's face. (And yes, I do see the irony in this statement with how I've acted tough here in the past lmao)
