Simon Nemec goes 2nd overall to NJ.
Can the Habs grab the #3 pick and grab either Cooley or Wright?

Did Daniel Briere get taller or are all the staff in Philadelphia on the shorter side?

Crazy draft so far. #1 prospect drops to 4th, huge trades. This is one of the more entertaining drafts that I can remember.

So, looking back at the top 4 picks, does anyone have an opinion on why Wright slipped to #4?
I also believe that if it wasn't Seattle picking at #4, that Wright may have slipped a little more down the line. Seattle can benefit huge just by marketing him.
I have said many times, that as a Habs fan I hope they pass on Wright...i just had a bad feeling about him......but I honestly didn't think he would slide to #4.
Does anyone have any ideas on what may have caused him to slip to #4.....and potentially further if Seattle wasn't picking?

Having guys in the spotlight for 3+ years slipping in the draft happens a lot, teams have more time to find warts...it happened to F.Forsberg, Fowler, Barzal and Chychrun who were highly touted and slid in the draft then went on to have nice careers. NJ didn't want to draft another center with all the money they have tied up in Hughes and Hischier. Arizona chose Cooley instead of Wright. Based on production, Montreal took the biggest gamble. Nemec was an impact guy in a mens's league. Cooley comes from the NTDP which has a strong track record of producing quality NHLers and he was the best forward out of a very strong group(6 1st rounders). Wright has dominated his age group for 3+ years, was a force at the U18 and put up very good numbers on an average Kingston team. Slafkovsky is the only guy who's production wasn't quite there, he had good playoffs and tournaments but mediocre regular season. I would like to see them send him to Liga another year before the Montreal fishbowl, both from a hockey and off ice standpoint.

He is, but I would keep him away from Montreal at 18. Get used to a glimpse of the spotlight(draft and camp) before being there year round. Media, fans and off ice "distractions" is a lot for a teenager.

The market in some NHL cities does not give that opportunity and its why they made Slaf the pick.

Plus you avoid the Montreal "fishbowl" for another year so the kid gets exposed to it more gradually.
