Rick Westhead @rwesthead · 14m Source tells me QMJHL President Gilles Courteau & league's insurer may be asked during testimony next Wed. about Victoriaville players Nicholas Daigle & Massimo Sicillano, who are charged w/ sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel in June 2021. Players' next court date is Aug. 4.

Rick Westhead is a terrific journalist, if hockey culture changes he'll have played a vital role in that. Good on him to keep on top of this story.

Yup, the dam seems to be breaking to a certain extent. That may be the only way culture changes. It starts in junior with teenage girls fawning over junior players and being all too willing to go with them...that's where education is huge in making sure that it doesn't turn into the situations we are now hearing about.

I mean I don’t blame teenage girls here, these are just shitty people doing shitty things. There’s lots of people who have girls fawning over them and they don’t do this to women. There’s a lot of people who have 1 night stands, hook ups, etc and they do them consensually. This has nothing to do with the women and everything to do with the guys.

I'm 100% not blaming the girls, just saying that having young boys at 16-17+ having girls all over them at a point where they don't have a lot of life experience, some being away from home for the first time, it creates situations where it only takes one guy with bad intentions pulling 2-3 or more along with him and creating a bad situation.

Your view of it is part of the culture problem. Abuse is abuse. 17yr old girl or boy fawning over another 17yr old girl or boy isn't a justification of abuse or endless consent. What creates bad intentions are assholes going too far. If 2-3 others join in they are also assholes going too far. The bad situation is assault and a crime. There's no being dragged down with someone in that instance. You either were present and stopped it or you were present and supported it. Leaders step up and do whats not necessarily popular in the moment. You said this starts in junior with teenage girls...and then I stopped reading. Assault and protecting it and paying off the victim does not start with the victim. It starts with a culture of money paying off victims because rich assholes play by a different set of legal standards. The culture is to let the boys pretend they are rich assholes because of the team they play for and the company the keep. That is where this all starts. The girls involved are victims...read the texts from the 2018 incident and the girl plainly says "I was ok with just you but not with everyone else". Thats not the girls fault. 8 drunk teenage assholes just happened to be protected by their national body which paid into a slush fund supported by our minor hockey systems. Its disgusting and allows the boys to get completely off the hook. But stop trying to justify it based on this 1 night stand "he's a future millionaire so I want to sleep with him" stuff. Most people here have had 1 night stands. So its not just junior hockey playing teenagers faced with how to treat people in those situations. The real issue here is the cover up and the fact that because these boys are tied to a shit load of money that they get to cross the line and suffer zero consequence and all the mostly older white men at the head of every department and the overall pyramid of Hockey Canada just make sure to keep the systems in place which allow for them to cover this stuff up. And since all this...who has taken the fall? Who has lost their job? Who has come out to speak against the system and make themselves the face of making things right going forward? The culture still exists and the longer it goes on the more sickening it gets as more stuff keeps coming out about past incidents involving our teenagers while playing for Team Canada. But please stop saying it starts with the teenage girls. That just further proves the point everyone outside the Hockey Canada walls are making about how disgusting this culture is. People are still trying to put it on the girls and not the boys...many of whom have had lots of training about how to handle the media and uncomfortable situations. These are not the 17yr old boys too nervous to talk to girls or trying to figure out their awkward lives....these are the ones who are being nurtured to be future leaders and acting like future assholes and getting off the hook when people start by blaming the girls.

I'm not blaming the girls, just pointing out that having a bunch of girls chasing them at a point in their life where their brain and value system is still developing, creates a perfect storm for those young boys to think that they can get away with almost anything. It puts a lot of elements together for a much more volatile situation. It doesn't excuse those same boys doing stupid/illegal things and there needs to be better programs to educate them about this.

I think you're 100 percent wrong. They should of known right from wrong, odds are that some of the players are/were used to being treated like they are God like and can do no wrong. The Hockey Canada hush money proves that. I see it in the local area in Cape Breton when walking in the rinks, some kids gets away with things based on who they are.

So you don't think it's a volatile situation? I have been around a lot of teenage boys in my life from playing to coaching to reffing sports...to raising a teenager...at that age the lines of right and wrong are quite blurry, kids don't have a lot of life experiences and ones that are good at sports think they are "special" because parents, coaches and parents have been telling them for many years. They start thinking they are bulletproof.

They're not getting drunk and punching the face off of some idiot at a pub and getting an assault charge. The bad things they're doing it mostly around this area. If they think they are so bulletproof why does it not spill over into more areas if they think they're so special and can get away with everything?

A better parallel would be for the billets to go on a trip for a week and have a well stocked liquor cabinet unlocked. In terms of it spilling over, we see it in interactions with officials, coaches and other players. How many junior players ask for a trade while unhappy with their ice time. We also don't know everything that goes on behind the scenes and with coaches.

What we do know is every time someone speaks out the culture is called out and there's crickets from teammates and the organizations surrounding everyone. Thats the problem. After this shit is exposed...there's still nothing but protection going on behind the scenes and zero people taking responsibility for their actions or a teams actions. Asking for trades isn't necessarily acting out. Every single case of that is different. Some kids are just homesick. There's cultural and language issues in this league. I'm sure some crappy billets fall through the screening cracks across the country. In a lot of ways the kids just replicate the adults with the on ice stuff. But the overall culture protecting anyone and everyone is getting kind of disgusting to keep seeing time after time after time as these scandals keep coming up. And we had all the forewarning we needed from some early whistleblowers of a lot of this stuff and absolutely nothing changed.

The natural reaction for people is to protect their own, but heads of organizations like Hockey Canada, the Chicago Blackhawks and Gymnastics USA have to be willing to pay a small price for the greater good. It definitely needs to also happen at the grassroots level, maybe having somebody independent handling whistleblower complaints. Victims went up the chain in a lot of these cases and got shut down and silenced.

Daigle and Siciliano pleaded guilty to sexual assault this afternoon. Daigle is also guilty of taking a video of the assault and distributing it. He showed the video to teammates and a coach.
The 17 yo employee of the hotel had agreed to meet Daigle in his room in the evening but she never agreed to have intercourse with both players. She felt forced to do it and Daigle took a video without her knowing about it.
Their lawyers had tried to convince the judge to discard the content of Daigle’s cellphone with the video evidence and text messages. They argued that the cellphone was taken illegally by police but the judge decided to allow this evidence. The trial was set to begin yesterday but it was paused immediately and they decided to plead guilty.

Bravo boys, easy case.
