Mastodon is a social media engine that looks and behaves like Twitter. Seems to be growing in popularity with the Twitter dumpster fire growing daily. It's a little slow right now due to the increased traffic, but I suspect it will grow as the money starts flowing in. mastodon.social/exploreAnyone here on Mastodon yet? Any opinions of the platform? Any issues with security or who it's run by? I created an account last night and some media outlets like TSN are using it already. Just wondering if it will be the wave of the future or if there is another Twitter-like platform out there that is more popular.

I think its all a bit overblown.
Its not like he's going to pull the plug...he might threaten it but it'll never happen.
People need to start closing Facebook accounts...not twitter...if the security of their personal information is really what they are concerned about.
Twitter is still a great platform if people would stop letting some of the noise distract them. I visit it for information on sports I follow and mostly mute the unfollowed political crap/spam that started polluting my own feed long before Elon ever took it over. But if you're getting into DM wars with idiots and trashing the owner on his own platform...yeah maybe twitter isn't for you and could become a dangerous weapon of your own information if shit ever leaked.
But as someone who just follows, rarely comments, and has sent like 2 DM's....there's much bigger concerns on other social media platforms when it comes to the privacy and security of my own information.

I agree with your thoughts. I don't post much on social media much either. Twitter is arguably the best resource for news now, so I follow it regularly. It took me about three years after Twitter existed before I used it. I thought it was just for posting what you had for breakfast... didn't realize people used it for news as much as they did. There's no upside to Mastodon right now. I was just curious to see if it would take off or if there were other options out there people were considering. A lot of people on Twitter have said they may switch to Instagram. I have an account on Instagram but never use it. It's just repetitive to me with no real value.

I take pics but dont post very many so the instagram type of social media never caught on with me but I can see how journalists would use it as a method of communication if twitter somehow disappeared. I honestly believe that within 2 year a group of former twitter engineers will have their own twitter lite type of spin off as well but that ultimately the restructuring we're seeing (putting that nicely...what we're seeing is a train wreck) will just leave twitter in the same spot it's been in the last 5-7 years or so as the thing most people check for national/global news. sports, politics with facebook being almost like the equivalent of the news your local newspaper would share before the digital age kind of replaced it yet also forced media to share content on there or lose out.

Most of Twitters staff has been fired. Elon won't "pull the plug", but the site will start seeing more and more bugs, and is incredibly unstable. Aside from that, he's unbanning hate accounts, he's basically going to turn it into another Parlor or truth.social which will be completely unusable for anyone who isn't on the far right, and especially unusable for queer folks or PoC due to completely unmoderated harassment, doxxing and incitements of mass shootings as we saw over the weekend. I made a Mastodon account, but I don't think anything can replace Twitter currently... but the direction twitter is going is not promising in the slightest.

I feel bad for bloggers, artists, YouTubers, and small studios and businesses that rely on Twitter to get their brand out. That's a valuable asset lost.

I made a Mastodon account, but I don't think anything can replace Twitter currently... but the direction twitter is going is not promising in the slightest. I don't care about who they ban or not. I control my experience on the platform based on who I follow. I mute anyone I dont follow who appears on my timeline that I dont want to see. If that drastically changes, i'll probably use it less. But when was social media ever a moderated safe place for minority groups? There's always been issues on every platform with hate speech. Thats not something unique to twitter. I just think people are overblowing it because they dont like who controls it. The site isn't seeing more bugs because of laying off staff. They might see slower dev cycles for the next little while but the platform was mostly stable without a ton of bugs before Elon and that won't change overnight for what 99.9% of the users expect from it which is an app they can refresh to get the latest tweets from people they follow.
