Dawson Grandy - 2006 - RW - Mount Academy - 18gp, 10-9-19 - Rd 13, 217 (combined u16 and u17 competition)
Of the forwards MacDonald leads the NBPEI u18 league in scoring, playing setup man for a very dangerous Charlottetown attack. Aucoin continues to score at a good rate on a young Macs team that has taken a step back from last year. Davis remains the top scorer on a very good Lac-Saint Louis team and is putting himself in a position that makes him hard for Sly to ignore. Lochead has really pulled away in the last month or so - he is 2nd in league scoring on a very good Pictou team. If this team wasn't trying to make a run for the Telus cup, I have no doubt Lochead would be playing Jr. A and I do wonder how this will affect his already slim chances next year. Morin and Travis continue to plug away as role players on their respective Jr. A sides, while Griffin and Pelletier are putting up solid but unspectacular numbers as 2nd year u18 players. Henderson has graduated to a full time Q player, and brings some toughness that the team lacked.
The backend looks well stocked and really is looking to be the bedrock of this teams future right now. Sly has openly praised Desjardins, who captains Saint-Eustache, currently setting the pace in Quebec u18. Waugh has been ever-present in the MHL, and his 16 points from the blue line is the best of any 16yo in the league (including forwards). Carbonneau has been an anchor on the backend for Notre-Dame. Hayes and Wambolt both fill leadership roles for their u18 clubs, but will be hard-pressed to fight their way into the picture on a crowded back end.
Cloutier is one of Quebec's most highly rated young goaltenders, and while he gets all the attention, Labbe continues to put up excellent numbers for Levis, and is definitely one to keep an eye on.
As of now, Desjardins looks to be a lock for next year. You would think Waugh would be too, but there is tons of competition on defence and you could see a prospect possibly getting moved. Aucion and Davis are giving themselves every chance of playing their way onto the team next year - I expect at least one to be on the roster. MacDonald is there as well, but his being a year older may be a strike against him. Dark horses for next year might include Lochead, Carbonneau and Labbe.
One thing Sly deserves some credit for is that our prospect pool remains completely untouched despite moving 35+ assets through the club over the trade deadline. He seems enthused by the group he has coming up.
