Good to see them sticking it to Gretzky. The media went easy on him when he said it was his wife that had the gambling problem. Now that CBC isn’t a rights holder, they don’t have to be scared of him. By the way, he did nothing wrong taking the money to be on these commercials. I can’t stand the gambling ads. It won’t be good for society over the next 10+ years. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sports-betting-gambling-ads-gretzky-mcdavid-matthews-nhl-1.6710407

I watched the episode and it was very interesting. It drives me crazy that I can't watch a game on tv now without being bombarded with ads for gambling. Sportsnet and others are even incorporating it into the the games they are showing. Even Atlantic Lottery asking me to bet $25.00 on one single bet and they will give me $10 complimentary cash to use. The are actually trying to get the users to bet bigger money and spend more money. This is shameful.

I gamble all the time on sports, I have no issues with the advertising during an in game experience and honestly, it does make some games more fun having a little skin in the game. Even if it’s just a small wager ($5, $10, etc).
Now are addictions on the rise? I’d say probably but it’s a huge industry and market, that IMO shouldn’t and won’t go away. It’s all about moderation, just like every other vice that people ultimately struggle with.
One thing I will say on the advertising though, and it’s good that the industry is now regulated so you can do it through reputable companies but I’m surprised there isn’t more restrictions on the advertising/ads in the same way cigarette advertisements are basically non-existent now.

Not everybody is like you. Obviously you can bet without overdoing it. I can too. A lot of people can't. Lots of suicides over gambling issues. You should watch the Fifth Estate episode about this. It enlightened me.

Legalized sports gambling is fine. Ads being thrown at your from every direction for sports gambling is not ok. Needs to be outlawed.

I like sports pools and throwing $20 on a 3 team parlay for NFL playoffs, but for some it's an addiction, I can see why blitzing the airwaves with ads is bad for them.

I assume I'm the biggest gambler on this forum and even I have an issue with all the ads.
One that really bothers me is Betrivers being a huge CHL sponsor. They're on the boards in every rink and they sponsor tweets from the official CHL Twitter account almost every day.
Nothing I love more than betting on the CHL but the last thing I want is these kids to know that even exists. Fortunately none of the regulated sites in Ontario have the CHL but their sites outside Ontario do so I still feel like if the players find out about it, they will justify it to themselves due to the constant gambling ads that the CHL is making money on while the players collect their $40 stipend.

This is shameful. I feel it should fall under the same logic as tobacco sales where it can exist but promotion should be limited. We're so far past anything rational now that its impossible to not be turned off by it. I'm the type of gambler who takes full advantage of the ALC promo's like you mentioned but i'm with everyone else saying the over promotion of it all does start to take enjoyment out of it as a casual gambler because I know what this is doing to the younger crowd in creating a belief that every single viewer has to gamble on a game for it to be enjoyable and the lack of regulation means very little stops these people from over spending and chasing losses and ruining their lives.

Legalized sports gambling is fine. Ads being thrown at your from every direction for sports gambling is not ok. Needs to be outlawed. The content of the hockey broadcasts should also be about the hockey game but shouldnt get into live in game odds on moneylines. As someone who does bet the content they're producing is cringe worthy. Nobody should be making any bets with real money based on what Cabbie says.
