What are your thoughts on the trade after 2 seasons? I was looking at the trade tonight and the trades that was connected to that trade. I think we made 4 other trades with a connection to that trade.

The original trade was Connor Shortall, 1st round (Emile Perron) and 2nd round (Cam Squires) Picks to DRU for Jacob Santerre and 1 round (Tyler Peddle) Pick At the 2022 draft we traded Emile Perron and 5th round pick in 2025 to Bathurst for Thomas Belgarde and 2nd Round pick 2023 (Dru) Then we moved Belgarde and 2nd Round (Alexis Boils) pick to VIC for 1st Round 16th pick (SNB) and 5th round 2024 (VDO) We moved the 1st round pick in 2023 and 2nd (Luciano Ruggiero) round to CHI for 1st round (Thomas Desruisseaux) pick and 2nd round (DRU) 2022. We send 1st (Xavier Veilleux) to CHI for Our 1st 2023. We Moved the 2nd (Alexandre Lallier) to Bathurst for 3rd (Etienne Desjardins) round pick, 2nd round pick 2023 (VDO) and 1st round 2024 (BlB). At the 2022-2023 trade Deadline, we moved Thomas Desruisseaux, 1st round pick in 2025 to CHI for Jacob Newcombe, 2nd round pick in 2023, and 1st round pick in 2024. 2 years later and the team is just getting out of the bottom of the league.
The players I see being here from the trade tree are:
Squires
Shortall
Biggar
Newcombe
Drafting 2nd and 1st overall should lead to turning a franchise around. We're just not there yet.
Shortall not really developing as expected hurt the initial trade. Flipping picks for a 19yr old Biggar while so far from contention never made much sense to me. Newcombe is good but still a consolation prize for Desruisseaux who was the consolation prize for moving Perron. Squires is excellent and actually fits the proper cycle and is one of the young guys developing nicely in spite of all the chaos.
Moving from #1 down to mid round you expect to get more in the deal then a 2nd and 18yr old D with some upside. I don't think thats changed from the day the deal was made.
Until the team turns a corner with some of these pieces contributing its still hard to like the deal from my perspective because I still think there should have been more and what was recieved hasn't helped achieve much yet.

With the effect of hindsight being 20/20, my opinion is having Squires instead of Peddle is a wash.
The full extent of the trade tree won't be fully known until the Desruisseaux trade is completed and the pick were rumored to get back is traded again for more immediate help.

The problem with trade trees is that it starts to get a little ridiculous, too. For example: Its easy to trace from Peddle to Perron to Desruisseaux to Newcombe. But that Chicoutimi deal was: Newcombe 2nd 23 1st 24 for Desruisseaux 1st 2025 So do the 1sts have anything to do with the Peddle trade tree? It starts to just get confusing at that point. Newcombe and a 2nd for Desruisseaux seems like a more logical deal but those 1sts send value each way, too and arguably cancel out and while are a part of the CB/Chic deal...not sure you can say they're a part of the Peddle tree. Perhaps a 2nd part of the deal in June brings it all into a different light but once those picks get added its a part of a different deal imo. |

I read the getting older and thought you were going to go with it in terms of how the deal added older players.... But I think many here are with you. Its hard to stay engaged with it all at this point. |

One of the reasons it's so hard to keep track of is because you guys are connecting trades that have no connection to the original Peddle trade.
To Drummondville:
2021 1st Rd Pick (2nd Overall) - Tyler Peddle
F - Jacob Santerre
To Cape Breton:
D - Conor Shortall
2021 1st Rd Pick (8th Overall) - Emile Perron
2021 2nd Rd Pick (22nd Overall - Cam Squires
Emile Perron is then traded at the 2022 Draft in the following deal.
To Acadie-Bathurst:
D - Emile Perron
2024 5th Rd Pick (TBD)
To Cape Breton:
F - Thomas Belgarde
2023 2nd Rd Pick (Drummondville) - Traded to Acadie-Bathurst at 2022-23 christmas trade period for 2024 2nd Rd Pick (Acadie-Bathurst) - TBD
Thomas Belgarde would then be flipped to Victoriaville as such.

Look at the trade of picks 16 and 19 for 13 and 27 without the 2023 1st ever being involved and it makes it easier. The 2023 1st is really the 16th pick we acquired and then traded to move up to 13. When that deal happened Chicoutimi didn't want pick 16 right away for some reason so they wanted to wait until pick 16 to gain possession of it. But this is where you lose the tree as well...picks 19 and 27 were a part of moving up from 16 to 13 so probably shouldnt count in the Peddle trade tree which means Biggar shouldnt be involved. |
