Ranking score measures quality of victory and recent play. Due to aging the regular season play is now making less impact on the rankings - Halifax moved from 7th to 3rd in these rankings but most impressive is their RS score. Its only a fraction of a point off of Seattle. Quebec still very good but two of Quebec's wins over Gatineau were already accounted for in last weeks rankings. Halifax made that dramatic leap in ranking since Tuesday - so in 6 days all just measured. 4 elite wins, 3 of them on the road, 2 shutouts, one 4+ goal win. These all factor prominently in the rankings.
As the Memorial Cup looms its is likely the Q representative will match very well with their WHL & OHL cousins. These teams are very strong. The final 4 QMJHL were all very strong. To have two top Q teams head into the final on winning streaks of 4 games (or more - Quebec won 19 straight against varying opposition) shows how it can go.
Kamloops is the Memorial Cup host. If they win their series with Seattle then Winnipeg automatically is in the cup. Winnipeg was pushed a little by Moose Jaw in these playoffs in round 2, but I wonder what happens if they collide with Seattle?? And do not get to walk into the Memorial Cup uncontested.
The last time a WHL league "champion" won a game at the Memorial Cup was in 2015 --8 years ago!! It was Kelowna in the year QC hosted the cup. Only host WHL teams have won games since, but not league champions. If these two king pins of the WHL wear down it might happen again?? If you are counting: 2016 Brandon (0-3) in year Red Deer hosted, 2017 Seattle (0-3) in year Windsor hosted, 2018 Swift Current (0-3) in year Regina hosted, 2019 Prince Albert (0-3) in year Halifax hosted, 2 pandemic years, 2022 Edmonton (0-3) in year Saint John hosted. Can this continue? The elements are there - the Quebec winner is strong by statistics whoever it is, the OHL winners tend to play better defense but never seem to go 0-3 and Kamloops familiar with whomever they face from their own league. The WHL drought is one of the weirdest streaks in sports because its a random tournament and they always trade to stack teams to win their league.
We will see.
