globalnews.ca/news/9706260/halifax-mooseheads-changes-scotiabank-centre/Some changes coming: - New digital advertising boards around the edges of the arena - Modernized concessions with digital signage - New public address system - Possible upgrades to dressing rooms - Possible addition of an elevator I think first and foremost they need to ensure their debit machines are working. They go down constantly, and I'm sure it's costing them thousands of dollars. I would also turn that concession space behind section 4 into another set of washrooms so folks on that side of the rink have an option not to go downstairs to use the washroom. There are certain parts of the rink that can't be fixed easily because of structure issues. When they put the premium seats at the top of the upper bowl, they forced everyone to go out to the concessions to move around, which clogged up the rink big time. I'm sure there are folks that don't go to the games when it is busy because they can't move. The renovations to the existing washrooms were good, and helped a lot. I understand that they can't just add washrooms everywhere. Someone mentioned that it seems like the more they improve Scotiabank Center, the farther away we get from a new arena. I agree with that take. We'll see if some more improvements improves attendance. But Halifax has had it's share of good hockey lately with the Memorial Cup, the World Juniors, and a couple Mooseheads playoff runs where they made the finals... all within the last 5 years. After next year Halifax will start the rebuild, so it will be difficult to see if these improvements and some of the season ticket benefits that will be implemented make a difference. Fans might be a bit hockey'ed out and take a break during the rebuild.

If they can improve the pizza offering- pizza that is burnt at the crust and still frozen in the middle- I will be ecstatic

Someone mentioned that it seems like the more they improve Scotiabank Center, the farther away we get from a new arena. They'll never get an arena in a better spot. The advantages of that location more than overcome the current shortfalls of the building, for now.

I really hope that these 2 can light a fire under the rest of the owners in the league. Its been rare to see anything actually innovative occur with most of the junior hockey franchises. From game day experience to atmosphere, use of technology, food offering etc it can often be quite cookie cutter. If they can actually bring some new ideas to the table and push some of the rest of the owners to do the same it would be huge for the league and junior hockey in general.
It has only been a few months, and more time will need to pass but so far it appears they are trying to stay away from hockey decisions and focus on the business side. I'm sure some of their season ticket holder benefits will end up being considered by other teams.
I thought it was interesting that when Halifax played Moncton in game 3, Peter was in attendance, and sat by himself at center ice in amongst where it was mostly Wildcat season ticket holders. Rather than getting access to the press/suite level area he chose to sit with the fans. I'm assuming he just bought a ticket himself. He was pretty much incognito not even wearing anything Mooseheads.
When it comes to an arena, the mooseheads have basically the exact same problem as the Blue Jays. The difference being the Blue Jays have a lot more capital to upgrade the facility. I can also imagine there is very limited political appetite for tax dollars to be spent on a new facility at this time given they have still been able to host world class events despite the known issues with the building.

If there was any way to redevelop that entire block bordered by Brunswick/Duke/Argyle/Carmichael (tearing down the existing arena + WTCC) - that's probably the best of both worlds. New arena, bigger footprint, same location.

The forum can only handle so much.

Tender went out late last week for HVAC and refrigeration upgrades at the Metro Centre - scheduled for summer 2024. halifax.bidsandtenders.ca/Module/Tenders/en/Tender/Detail/cb492ce2-e6ba-41c5-91f3-30f7787ab8b6The plant really struggled to handle the large crowds we had this season during the World Juniors and playoffs, so this work should have a direct impact on the playability of the ice surface. Hopefully a lot less bouncing pucks. Should also have a positive impact on our ability to host major curling events as well (Brier/Scotties/Worlds).

It's a bit weird because wasn't the ice also replaced in 2018? That year the Moose had a 15 game road stint to start the season?

It's a bit weird because wasn't the ice also replaced in 2018? That year the Moose had a 15 game road stint to start the season? I read through the RFP documents. In 2018 they replaced the ice plant and sometime back in the 2000s did some HVAC - but this is to address upgrading refrigeration, air conditioning, air flow and a piece of roof that needs replacement or repair. They want to do upgrades to also be energy efficient and take advantage of heat capture technology too. So this may be upgrading controllers of what is plugging into the ice plant which is under the floor. And putting a 2020s level environmentally friendly air exchange system and the technology in that has come a long way in 15 years. Absolutely critical for reducing humidity but the lower energy cost will save money and meet environmental standards too. This work will take place April 2024 (probable) according to RFP - a long playoff run would possibly delay some of it starting. They want it done by August 2024.
