Well it's officially training camp week, now just to wait for the Eagles to release an official roster and schedule. Looking forward to it. Especially interested in seeing the two new Euros and if Conor Davis reports (have we heard anything yet?) Also interested in getting a look at the American pick Matthew Lacombe as well as a couple of the young D like Waugh, Murphy, Carbonneau and Desjardins to see how many of them can grab a roster spot. Will be fun to see how the veterans have developed in the offseason as well, but these newcomers and youngsters will be the biggest stories at training camp I think.

It all starts with on-ice practices/games this coming Friday.
Predictions on who comes to camp and makes a statement? Really looking forward to seeing Waugh's progression after a year in Jr A.
Stahon will be interesting to watch as well along with Ricard, both signed, both likely on the roster.

Not really a lot of interesting camp battles, the biggest questions are up front. Do they want to take 3 07’s in Ricard, Foley and Pilling? My gut says no and I don’t think it’s a bad thing if they don’t all make it. Do they want to move on from fringe 05’s like Henderson/Campbell and do they think an 04 like Roy who is probably playing on the 4th line is a spot better served for a younger body? He’s strong on draws and a veteran, so I think they keep him around. Realistically there’s probably like 17 guys “fighting” for 14 spots, unless someone really stands out in camp that was unexpected.
The defence is set, the only real question is do you find room for Will Murphy? I think the easy move, is either send him to Jr. A or back to U18. There’s only so much room for young D and with Desjardins/Waugh ready for the Q, it makes the decision easy in my mind. Carbonneau looked to take a big step forward this past season, so while I think he’s on the outside looking in and a long shot, he may be able to force the teams hand if he continued to progress and make them break camp with 8 D.
The goalies are set but the question is, who’s the starter and are either actually ready to be starters? The Eagles need stability between the pipes and if one of them steps up, it’s their job to lose.
My projected roster, or what I think it will look like with some other candidates who maybe have a real chance depending on their camp performance or the lack thereof for some other players.
Houde- MacDonald- Squires Newcombe- Burbidge- Shields Ricard- Patterson- Begin Fullerton- Roy- Stahon Aucoin, Campbell
Biggar- Schmitt Daigle- Shortall Waugh- Lavoie Desjardins
Ruccia Milota
Other Candidates Forwards: 1- Luke Foley 2007 2- Rory Pilling 2007 3- Cameron Henderson 2005 4- Luke McPhee 2005 5- Carson Griffin 2006 6- Lane Lochead 2005
Other Candidates Defence: 1- Will Murphy 2007 2- Alexandre Carbonneau 2006

I tend to agree with most of it and have pretty similar lines penciled in right now myself. I'm most intrigued by the group of young D as well (Waugh, Carbonneau, Murphy, Desjardins). In an ideal world, what can really turn this team from good to actual contender would be if two of those guys show they are ready for full-time duty and can contribute on a good team right now. If so, Shortall could be moved at some point to open up a 20 spot for a scoring forward. Goaltending would remain a pretty big question mark but if a couple young D step up in camp, swapping Shortall for a scoring forward would create a more balanced team at both ends of the ice.

Why sacrifice team Defense for a gamble on offense? I am not sure there is a 20 that's available that could have a bigger impact on this team. Move Shortall and you have Lavoie, Daigle, Waugh, Desjardins playing 18+ mins a night, one injury and you are looking for another Trevor Thurston mid Nov. If the strategy with this roster is not built around a 200' responsible game while we let our D and more importantly our goalies develop, we are in big trouble. I will take 3-2 wins all season if necessary. I could see Lavoie and Shortall as one of the best shut down pairings in the league. As for the start of camp today, I am hoping to see Stahon as the best forward on the ice today. Nice write up on Lochead by J. Fraser, hoping he comes to camp ready to compete for a spot. Has there been any news on Pilling? Is he going back to RNS? I would like to see him hang with the Rush this season and be real close to the Eagles. The Rush will be playing until Mid May as they host the National Championships, lots of hockey and he could play a key role on that team. Best of luck to all the players!

9:00 A.M. Group Aug.18th Notes: • A couple nerves in some of the guys as some passes were either missed or fumbled on possession.
• Easy to tell McPhee played in the league last year as he's come out of the gate hot giving full effort on all drills.
• Couple of the younger defencemen need to strengthen their back skating and gap control as they were blown by on rush drills.
• Samuel MacFarlane is an interesting free agent seems to have a decent shot and hand-eye but skating stride is very awkward looking at times.
• Pilling showed good hands in battle drills stealing pucks and getting around defenders.
• Battle drill from 9:30 exhausted good group of guys noticed one guy left the ice after not sure if injured or sick after drill.
• Whoever makes it to main camp is going to earn it this year cause these poor guys were gassed hear one guy say to coach Matt Anthony that he wasn't sure he could keep going he was that tired.
• Ended practice with blue line to near blue line and back and then to red line and back skating drill multiple times Quinn left to throw up before drill was over, again whoever makes main camp will have earned it

10:30 A.M. Group Aug.18th Notes: • Have a feeling people are going to really like Lubos Stahon
• You can tell Ricard is the son of a Q league GM as he's come to camp knowing exactly what he needs to do to play in the Q
• Marcellus Francis is definitely 5'06" but has some good wheels and some decent skill to offset his height but I'd worry about him getting out muscled at this level.
• Murphy thrives in physical play once he strengthens his skating some more he could be a dominant physical shut-down defenceman.
