Is this a good sign? Mooseheads doubling down. Posting this about their 2nd round pick today on Twitter. Interesting quote from Kilfoil's coach Kyle Quick. "Quick describes Kilfoil as one of those players with that ‘it’ factor. He is a quiet leader who makes everyone around him better and certain aspects of his game are going to help facilitate his transition to Major Junior hockey." I like that reference to "Major Junior hockey". I was going for post something about this. The fact it’s only about him and nothing about all the other picks is what says more to me. I think he’s on this team as the 3rd line center this fall.

Wouldn’t read to much into it

Why trade a very valuable 2nd round pick next year when they are more then likely going for it again. They need as many picks as they can get.

So that could mean the Mooseheads weren't taking a big of a chance as I thought they were. Well they still did lose two picks in the past draft on that deal.

Is there still the 2 round American draft? Yes, it was the day after the main draft. Results: theqmjhl.ca/draft/2023QMJHL_USThere is no buzz on it as I don't think there has been any kid actually come to the Q from this draft. If you were serious about a trying to get someone to report, you would just draft them in the regular draft like Halifax does.

Still, if there was any chance at all, Halifax is the city American players seem to choose....

If I'm Kilfoy and I've done my research on Canadian junior hockey and the Mooseheads, this is what I see:
If I choose the QMJHL:
- My ceiling as a 16 year old on a contender is 3rd line center and MAYBE, some 2nd line power play time. That again is the ceiling. - As a 17 year old, the team I'm on will most likely implode around me, and I'll be left as one of the most skilled players on a rebuilding team for two seasons. - As a 19 year old, I may be traded to a contender. Or, if I'm not good enough to go pro as a 20yo, I may stay and be a 20yo in a year Halifax may be decent again.
If I choose the USHL/NCAA:
- My ceiling on a USHL roster is likely playing higher in the lineup with more quality playing time (I don't know where Dubuque is in their cycle but unless they're a USHL all-star team, most likely they'll be worse than Halifax next year, resulting in more ice time. Same goes for my 17yo season. - As an 18yo I can go NCAA and play against tougher competition earlier, helping my development.
Selfishly, I hope Kilfoy chooses Halifax. Realistically, I don't know if Halifax is the best option for him at this stage in Halifax's rebuild cycle. If Saint John had drafted him for example, he'd be able to grow with them and be in his Q prime when they're going for a championship.
I like the pick, because as mentioned, if Kilfoy doesn't report, Halifax will get a compensation pick in a year they'll need higher picks. It basically kicks a 2nd round pick down the road. If he reports, it's a bonus.

This seems like a swing at the fences type move knowing it’s unlikely he comes and they will get a pick next year if he indeed doesn’t.

If he reports, it's a bonus. This is a post that has your personal theory in it. You have been of the mind set this is the “go for it year”. You believe this team is going to do a complete fire sale next year. Here’s the problem with that thinking what’s this team second line? Other than Whynot who are this teams 20yo? Who are this teams Euros? Still a lot of questions to be answered with this team. Today right now I’m not sure this team a 100 point team. Every team in this division got better and Halifax actually took a step back. I’ve said it a few time now they are loosing 100 goals from four players graduating. They don’t actually have those replacements yet. Halifax still have a soils core for this season but I’m not so sure A. They go all in and B. Are they still favourites? It’s also very possible they don’t go all in and just make a few adds at the deadline and look to 24/25 as a go for it year. Really a lot is riding on the Euro draft. I know Halifax didn’t really have anything to trade but the one move they do make at the draft is to get this kid. They now actually have to catch up to teams like Victo and RN for this season. If you look to 24/25 season Kilfoil could be on the top line with Vidicek and Cataford for his draft year. Think about it he’s basically Cataford now when Cataford was drafted. All the reports basically describe Cataford. Do we already forget Cataford is just finishing his 17yo season? If I’m him I look at Halifax’s track record with players getting picked high in the NHL and it’s a no brainer. Then you have to look at the chance to win right away doesn’t hurt at all.

Hey maybe you’re right Halifax could trade Dumais and Furlong at Xmas and get a ton back which would help them load up for 24/25 year when the Q host the cup . At the very least it’s a good fall back position to be in if the season is looking bleak at the half way mark .
