Looks like Jon Sim will be joining the Mooseheads in a player development role.
There's a bit of irony that neither of his sons went the Q route, tho I'm sure that might have been different had he been able to guarantee they were chosen by Halifax... maybe.
Anyway, it's an interesting add I hope pays some dividends.

I am guessing the Sim hiring is the new era of the Simon's ownership. I am sure Cam is giving them some suggestions that he feels would help the organization. Maybe Smith wasn't as receptive to this kind of hiring? Just speculating.

I said this in the aftermath of the sale, if the Simons can put their money where their mouth is and grow the hockey ops staff - this could be really positive. Don't think there's Q rules surrounding how many staff/scouts/coaches you can have on payroll?

Can someone explain to me what a "player development role" does? The wildcats added one last summer with Steve Bernier and I have no idea what he does.

Can someone explain to me what a "player development role" does? The wildcats added one last summer with Steve Bernier and I have no idea what he does. From my experience, player development coaches/roles are essentially that - they look at the development of the individual players (not meaning to sound snarky). Often, you'll see them run skills practices, 1-on-1 video, work in an advisor role with the player, another channel for players to voice concerns or problems, determine what needs to be worked on during the off-season, etc. They are meant to be a mentor to players. When used effectively (coaching staff & player development team actually communicate/on same page), can be a great addition. I'm sure in some organizations this may change, but typically allows for coaching staff to have a greater focus on the systems & also filter some communication from players to the coaching staff. Not sure if this is a part-time/consultant type gig for Sim or if it is full-time, but like that their is an investment into player development.

From the article - "In the newly created role, Sim will be responsible for working with Mooseheads players individually as well as assisting the coaching staff in crafting development plans. Some other duties will see him review and analyze video with players while also performing on-ice skills sessions." It sounds like a useful thing to have, honestly. I feel like that's a little bit of money that may translate to a lot of success on the ice over time.

This is the Simons putting their money where their mouth is.
They said from Day 1 that they would be investing in the team, players and coaches, and that's exactly what they're doing.

I’m sure Cam had his hand in there too but in this part of the province Ali is king. He seems to know directly or secondhand people in those parts.

I feel like that's a little bit of money that may translate to a lot of success on the ice over time. For me, that role is 100% of what junior hockey is but to have a guy specifically in that role doesn’t seem common and could have a great impact… minimal or maybe a better term is lesser in the short term. It won’t turn a 20 goal scorer into a 35 goal scorer this year or result in another 30 power play goals. But incremental improvements that would have been otherwise unrealized over several player over time could be big. Coaches, of course, do this now but it’s awesome to have someone dedicated to that role. Coaches are reviewing tape from last week, planning what needs focus in practices, running practice, reviewing upcoming opponents, working out lineup changes, figuring out a broken power play etc. They can’t review video, update development plans, work on off ice goals and practice skill drills with 20+ individuals every week. It’s basically a perfect position for junior hockey. I think a guy like Crosby could see big benefits.
