Very tragic...
Lot's of debate on whether the NHL will try to mandate neck guards now.
After watching the video of just the collision....a few times....it's different looking how Petgrave got his foot that high up.
Not saying it was intentional, though some are, but perhaps what the intent exactly was from Petgrave, if anything.

I don't care if it was accidental or intentional but the racial attacks on Petgrave are disgusting.
If intentional I have no idea why he did it, but I can guarantee you it's not because he's black.
I hate this planet sometimes.

I was surprised this hadn't been brought up sooner too. I had only heard about his passing and that the league is now mandating neck guards. Didn't see the replay and wasn't aware of the controversy involving another player and the racial attacks. Absolutely horrible.

i can't believe the video of the incident is so readily available out there
it was a tragic accident you can't convince me any hockey player ever tries to slice somebody with their blades
neck gurads should be mandatory i cannot believe in this day and age they are not

As far as I know, neck guards have been mandatory in most if not all amateur leagues for quite some time, so I expect few if any players have no experience wearing them … as for supply, the local sporting goods store almost certainly has enough on the shelf to outfit an entire pro team. Neither excuse holds water in my mind. Can anyone think of another sport where players who reach the highest level suddenly remove protective gear they have worn all along? It never made sense to me. It would be nice to see a few high profile players come out and lead by example and publicly say they are wearing one and they think everyone else should too.

MLB players and double-ear flap batting helmets. NFL football O-linemen and knee braces. (mandatory in NCAA) In fact, the NFL only made knee and thigh pads mandatory in 2013. But I get what you're saying.

The WHL just mandated them today...quite a difference from the Q which has mandated them since the 90s
I have no idea how anyone could be aware of this incident and then choose not to wear one mandated or not.
But then again this is a sport in which still has remnants of calling a player chickenshit or other names of they don't want to engage in a fist fight on the ice, for players as young as even 16.
I believe The current rule allows players to play without a neckguard if it falls off until the next stoppage. This should probably be amended to match the helmet rule if you want to maximize safety.

Manslaughter charges, but I think you may see something more severe result from the trial if they examine how he's played the game before.
I want to believe it was accidental but I've seen video out there of him trying basically the same kick at another player.
And it was such an unnatural play. I've seen countless hits across many leagues and I've never seen a leg kick out like that in any of them.

I'm not going to insult the leadership here or the membership with my own take on the incident. We all see the very same things differently when it comes to hockey. I don't think for a moment that anybody tried to kill or maim another player. I just hadn't seen the following vid of the incident in slow motion before. It's now before the courts and not for me to try to sway anybody one way or another. I'll just say that when I played it on a big screen - I was appalled by what I saw - or what I think I saw. Petgrave - Johnson incidentWhy would your own take insult anyone? Just post what you think. Thats what we're all doing.
