Another game where Power Play could have made a big difference in outcome.

Not so fun fact of the day, the Eagles are the lowest scoring team by goals/game in the Q at 2.5 goals/game overall and 1.6 goals/game at home.
15 goals in scored in 9 home game this year.

Milota's last 2 starts (1.03 GAA, .963 Save %, 0-2)
What an absolute kick in the sack for that poor kid.

Shields and Patterson situation are both head scratchers. If they are part of the future they need to find their game ASAP or somehow be given an opportunity to maybe try and find it before Christmas? Shields was a healthy scratch last night and both him and Patterson aren't seeing much ice time on the 4th line most of the season. Ice time is earned sure..but that doesn't instill much confidence when things aren't going well for young players. It is not like the top 6 guys are clicking all the time so why not from time to time slide guys like them up into a spot to see if you can create a spark get them going? At this rate their confidence is likely shot and their value to trade, if that is the play, is just dropping so I don't understand the game plan with them.

Just so frustrating thinking every time there's potential a corner has been turned to see another complete egg laid on home ice.
The ineptness of management is creating this weird divide among those who actually still follow the team.
There's the bunch who thinks this is a great team being hurt by refs and a bad bounce or 2. They think everything said here is negative and counter productive.
Then there's the bunch expecting normalcy. Who understand how other teams have built and had success and see us following a different path and see everyone of these as just a clear sign that we're simply dysfunctional thanks to upper management's issues cascading all the way down to player development.
I'll have more to add once I get a chance to do a deeper dive into some of this.
The simple response to a game like that is this: Its continue as dysfunctional or start firing people.

If these guys are not injured, particularly Shields, they should be playing more ice time. Both are very good players, and certainly better than their stats indicate to date. If the issue is not injury related, then build their confidence back. Don't make it worse. If they have a somewhat far fetched idea of competing next year, then playing this years 20's or 19's that won't be back next year, on the second line, while benching or significantly limiting the ice time of the players you drafted to be impact players. Well that won't deliver results. They already lost an impact draft pick in Desurreaux due to what appears to be ice time. They can't afford to have these two guys asking for trades at bargain prices, only to go elsewhere and have their game turn around for the better.

Definitely time for Couterier and Robitaille to make their Christmas wishlist and check it twice. We've got alot of passengers on the team right now who are much better served in Jr. A/B and not where we need them to be.
Jérémie Minville (2004 LW) in Gatineau would have to be towards the top of my personal target list. Perhaps package with Cory Macgillvary (2005) as well for a more veteran presence on D.
The million dollar question though with Gatineau being in full sell mode is the asking price.

Let me start by saying i'm not trying to single guys out for effort. There's not always a direct line between effort and production in a sport like this.
But lets look at some of this development for this team the owner and GM were willing to say was ready to contend about 12 months ago now that we're at the 1/4 point of the season after 17 games.
William Shields: 11th overall pick. Top line potential. At 16 played mostly every night and put up 12+13 in 64 games. 12% shooting %. Expectations were he could be a 20-20 guy....maybe even 25-25. Realistically that would put him around 5+5 in 17 games. Shields was a healthy scratch last night and has 1+3 in 16 games. On pace for 4 goals and 12 assists. 4% shooting.
Luke Patterson: 4th rounder who was the captain of a great midget team. Full time here last year at 17 with high hopes. Similar to Shields...10+12 but in only 54 games. Coming into his 18yr old season...similar expectations as Shields...20-20 potential...maybe 25-25. Luke played his 17th game last night. 0+0. 0+0. 0+0. Yes I put it down 3 times. Because thats how amazing it is that a player like that with the skill he has come in with more experience and somehow regressed to being a complete non-factor every single night.
Conor Shortall: 20yr old leader. We all know he's not here to run our PP. But you expect 20yr olds to have a certain impact on the game. At 18 here Conor put up 4+16 in 66 games. At 19 he put up 2+17. As a returning 20 playing lower in the lineup you don't expect big points but you still expect...something. Conor's stat line: 0+0 in 17 games.
Each goaltender has more points at the quarter mark then 1 of our 20yr olds and an 18yr old who scored 10 goals at 17.
Brayden Schmitt: Never liked the trade. Voiced my complaint. The more I watched him...the more I questioned the price. Never really dominates or takes control. We were basically sold he was a top pairing D we were jumping on to buy early. 36GP for us after the deal...1+19. Not bad production but another level was expected. 19yr old Schmitt has 0+2 in 17 games.
After 17 games this team is 9-8. They're about as far from entertaining as you can get on home ice where its been a disaster. They have scored 15 goals in 9 games. Been shutout 3 times. Lost by 4+ 3 times. 3-6 record. They have a -15 goal differential. And a bottom 3 PP in the entire league.
The assets cost to add players to this team: Burbridge: 2 1sts and a 2nd MacDonald: 2 2nds and a 6th Biggar: 2nd+3rd Begin: 5th Roy: 4th McPhee: 7th Schmitt: 1st and 3 2nds
While bringing other poor choices for 19 and 20yr olds for last year (Hebert, Cote, Johnson) we gave away a Matthew MacDonald for an 8th rounder. Gave up a 3rd+6th for Owen Arnold in August and gave him to Gatineau in June.
How many more losses have to happen? How many more bad management decisions need to happen?
Irwin Simon hired clowns and now has a complete and utter circus on his hands is the only way to look at it. Sly has overpaid for players he drafted in Bathurst with mixed results. The Schmitt trade looks awful. Buying average vets to play over younger players with higher ceilings has cost us 1 player and looks to be well on the way to costing us the development of 2 more.
Its November 2023. In June 2022 we had bottomed out with an awful roster. It took less then 20 games after bottoming out to declare an intent to win and start buying.
We don't need to hire world class. We need to hire common sense. We have none. We're once again a running joke within the circles of the league.
When does someone pay for it with their job? Because people are already tired of watching the circus of unentertaining and drama free hockey and players with high expectations completely wither away under the complete lack of leadership from the top of this organization on down.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Patterson has requested a trade at this point. I dont have any inside knowledge but I could see a scenario where he ends up in Moncton after the trade period. Unfortunately for Cape Breton I cant see them getting much given his production. Mid round pick or perhaps the Cats flip one of their 17 year olds for him that are playing 4th line.
Moving back home and playing with Lounsbury who he's close friends with might be what the kid needs. A guy who went into last season hoping to garner interest at the NHL Draft, or at least a camp invite has put up zero points as an 18 year old is quite shocking. Looking at how its laid out above though this seems like more of a pattern for the team than an outlier. Outside of maybe Lavoie & Ruccia, it seems to me that almost every player either regressed or plateaued from an outsiders point of view.
I dont really know what could possibly be the answer besides totally cleaning house of the front office and coaching staff. At this point if its just a coaching change you are going on your 5th coach in 4 years.
