Is there a player who is looking for exceptional status for next season?
I heard about Alexis Joseph being a possibility, unsure how true that is....
Just curious to hear if there are any players that could qualify.

FWIW, Joseph is ahead of Veleno's pace, but wants to play a second year for Magog.
Veleno's exceptional status was largely based on the fact that his birthday was so close to the beginning of the year (Jan 13th), so he was only 2 weeks from being eligible in the first place.

Didn't Veleno also threaten to go the US Route if he wasn't granted exceptional status? I feel like that was a big discussion and it came down to the wire.

Yes, Veleno's threat probably granted him the exceptional status. Joseph seems to have better advisors.

Yes, Veleno's threat probably granted him the exceptional status. Joseph seems to have better advisors. Veleno also had the luxury of deciding if he would ask for exceptional status after the draft lottery had already taken place knowing full well he would go to Saint John and not Bathurst.

And then Bowers didn't go to SJ and never played in the Q.

and Veleno was far from an exceptional player
i think/hope they get away from granting exceptional status to very good players..... the word exceptional has meaning apply it wisely

Outstanding skill maybe doesn't fit, I say coming nowhere near the NHL. However given as others said his birthday situation, exceptional status works in the sense the it was an unusual circumstance that to benefit his game an out of the ordinary decision was made. Though I'm not really a huge fan of it either, I do get why it happens. They're prime development years in a player's skill and playing abilities. Why waste a key year in a league they can't really develop further in. It would absolutely suck though to miss out on a player you should've gotten had they not gotten exceptional status.

The cut off is the cut off for a reason. I agree with bois that Veleno wasn't exceptional and I think his case hurt the case of future exceptional players but thats actually a good thing for the game. If 15yr old kids want to blackmail a league, let them leave. No 1 player is worth bending your rules for, especially for a 4-5 year career at the max. How many tickets did the QMJHL lose if Veleno went south and Bowers reported to SJ? What did Veleno do to prove his exceptional skill? He had a great 18yr old season his his 4th Q season. Otherwise he was a good but not great 1st overall and thats comparing him to 16yr old 1st overalls. The only reason anyone should get exceptional status is by being exceptional at multiple facets at the game. Talent, skill, and maturity to begin with. Not so the league can secure the rights of a good player. Not because someones birthday is close to the cut off. We see now how letting those factors cloud the judgement just hurts the overall process for those who truly are exceptional but long term that will be a positive as it shouldn't be easy for 15yr olds to prove they're exceptional...but thats is how we know they really are.

Was there any Exceptional Talk when Sid was that age ? I don't think anybody doubts that he could have played in the Q at 15 .

When he was 15 years old , he was told he was going 1st Overall to Saint John then 36 Hours before the Q Draft his world got turned upside down . Although I was pissed at the Time , he had a pretty good College Career and was a 1st Round Pick . Now he just keeps bouncing around .....all that talent ....was it a Bad Attitude ? .......Heart ? ......Injuries ?
