I was thinking recently about the loss of the Canada/Russia series the CHL used to do. With that being dead and for good reason, I was thinking it would be really cool for the league to revive the series but with the Americans.
There's probably more things to deal with though since a lot of the players would be playing NCAA, they'd have to dedicate time to do the series.
It would be nice to see a fun exhibition though with our other rivals. Would be a good opportunity to show off the leagues to American players too and maybe even grow the CHL to more of an American market than we already have.

I think the biggest hurdle is how the ncaa considers the chl “a pro league” so who knows how they would take it having their players playing “pro” players. I think another good option would be the Swedes tbh or the finns

USA would be so much more exciting given the historic rivalries we've always had with each other.

Good it's more than run it's course It never made sense to me beyond the first year or 2 as a gimmick. Nobody is walking away from 1 game with no chemistry with much of a different opinion then has been formed based on 30-40 games in league play. Its not like these kids gets no exposure and this game decides it all. Its actually the opposite where so much goes into the scouting now that a 1 off like this might as well just be all off ice testing and Q/A stuff for teams to better get to know the players off the ice. That would actually go further re: making decisions between player A and player B vs their performance in the game itself.

That game last night was incredibly boring. I've never found it to be thrilling by any means but figured it might be somewhat entertaining in person - nope. Total snooze fest. I was jealous of the person beside me who brought a book.

Unless you're hardcore into your own teams draft eligibles or a relative of a player...thats 100% what i'd expect to hear from a paying customer to that game. There's no story. No rivalry. Its a team sport yet that game is legitimately the most individualistic as hockey can get because the results mean nothing and literally only your individual performance is viewed whether its positively or negatively. A skills comp would actually engage fans and show some human elements of the players. I'm way more interested in knowing if Lavoie has the hardest shot or can skate as fast as his peers then I am of his teams performance in an exhibition. Its amazing the game got to this point when you break down the ticket buyers experience.

Specifically on ice player comparisons, less about the tangibles, more about the intangibles. For a CHL fan who rarely gets to see the O or W, I find it refreshing to witness the hype around certain players. Tij Iginla for example, lots of hype, it was good to see him live. The game, the score, means little to me, just enjoy the players. Likely a one and done , it will be some time before the new format hits Atlantic Canada.

If you need to, I'll accept any and all thank yous here or in my inbox. Kidding aside that's awesome, and honestly makes a ton of sense. I always viewed the Americans as a bigger rival for Canada anyway. Especially with the fall of the Soviet Union and it was always kinda just Canada and the US would team up to have a distaste for the Russians.

been 15 years since i watched it.... aside from a period or two if an Islander or Rocket was in the game
if it were held here i doubt i'd go even with a free ticket
USA versus CHL tho.... i'd watch that for sure

US vs CHL....how would that work? Is it still draft eligible prospects or more of an All Star game? Is it primarily USHL players or are NCAA players involved? If the latter, I would expect it to be a bit lopsided given the difference in ages.
And a two game series just seems weird...

Draft eligibility doesn't change based on what league you're in. There won't be a 22yr old NCAA undrafted senior playing in a draft eligible game. That would be 17yr old draft eligibles and the 18's who missed the cutoff for last year.

Won't these rosters basically be the same that everyone will have seen/will see in the Gretzky-Hlinka / U18 tournaments?
