realllyyyy wish there was a waiver section of the Q site to see which players are released/picked up...Hope they implement this in the future. Now we have to just rely on teams to announce it and not every one does.

Now we have to just rely on teams to announce it and not every one does. The players have the option to say no. We'll find out in a couple of days, since rosters have to be finalized by Wednesday at noon Eastern. After Gatineau basically trying to bully Anderson MacDonald into signing years ago, I'd rather not see anything until the players have signed.

I was unaware of the Anderson MacDonald thing though.

The lack of movement in the trade period seems to be made up from waiver moves.

The NHL publicizes who is on waivers, and then announces a day or two later if they have cleared waivers or been claimed by someone, and it doesn't seem to cause any grief. The Q not publicly disclosing who is on waivers must in some way be connected to their not sharing the 50 man lists for each team.

When a player is claimed on waivers in the NHL, they are obligated to report. When a player is claimed on waivers in the QMJHL, if the player is 19, then the team just gets first chance to sign the player. I believe that the rule is different for 18s.

So there is a waiver priority of some sort - anyone know how this works in the Q? Presumably it starts based on prior year standings and then moves around based on claims and current year results at some point ... the highest priority team has first chance to make a claim - presumably if they add someone they then go to the back of the line for the next guy? As for the player being able to say no - can they decline an offer from a team, and then accept one from another team that is more to their liking, or if they decline a claim by a priority team at that point are they somehow limited to Jr A?

The waiver priority for the first waiver draft (the day after teams have to offer 19s a contract in September is based on the previous season's standings). The waiver priority for the second draft (the day after the trade window closes) is based on the standings on that day. The QMJHL does not put teams to the back of the line if they make a waiver claim (except during the "draft" itself, so a last place team could theoretically claim a bunch of guys in-season (it's very rare for players to be on waivers in-season anyway). The rule for 19s is that if the player rejects the team, the player becomes a free agent (signing a player card is optional and you can only protect a 19 year-old if they either have signed a player card or refused to sign with anyone and you already had their rights). The theory is that a team claiming the player has interest and a spot for the player (since they have to sign the player to a player card). Normally, the players are very similar in terms of quality so there would be little incentive for a player to say no to go to a different team from a hockey standpoint. An 18 year-old isn't required to be offered a player card, so they can be protected regardless of whether they are willing to sign or not.

But I am still a bit confused as to what happens if a player prefers to go to a different team than the one claiming him- can that happen? Let's say the Cats place a player on waivers ... and the team with highest priority wants to claim him ... but the player would rather go elsewhere in the league (a better team, possibility for most ice time, closer to home, whatever ...). Can they refuse to sign with the team that claims them, and then become a free agent and sign wherever they like?

That's how Anderson MacDonald ended up on the Sea Dogs (he was claimed by Gatineau). In that situation, there is usually a whole lot more to the story (proximity to home, ice time to try to get a CIS offer, Jr A is offering more money). Better teams generally do not claim players in the waiver draft because most of the players available are usually depth players on weaker teams (there are always exceptions, like a specific fit).

David Doucet in Val d'Or has been let go as well (could be his own decision to leave I'm not sure) but he will finish the year with the Miramichi Timberwolves in Jr. A

What's the mechanism/timeline to bring in players that clear waivers in the OHL and WHL? I know their trade deadlines are both tomorrow - super annoying that the CEGEP deadlines don't allow us to be on the same cadence. Don't want to derail this thread, but are there any rumours yet of where some of the graduating 20s in the Q are headed to school in the fall?
