As we enter this year's playoffs and all the concern on the Moose it's probably good to look back on the 2020 draft. If you gave out hall of fame drafts, this would be in the Moose's Hall of Fame. I believe it is the best draft for both quality and quantity that the Moose have ever had and it led the charge to having 2 go for it years and not having the cupboards completely bare to do that.
Yes there are concerns to this year's team, but no one is questioning the talent. Last year the Moose gave a friggen stacked Quebec team all they could handle and if not for a Dumais injury could have made it even closer...and thus most likely win the cup. This year the talent is there, they are just inconsistent.
But when you look back at that 2020 draft, the results are crazy:
Rd 1: - Vidicek (14) : 241 GP; 260 points - Dumais (18): 193 GP; 325 points
Rd2: - Furlong (22): 227GP; 132 points -Swan (28) 210GP; 99 points* *Swan traded for a 2023 4th (BAC)
Rd4: -Rousseau (61): 123 GP -Carr (66): 154 GP* *Carr traded for a 2023 4th (BLB)
Rd 5: - Tessier (78): 116GP* *Tessier traded for a 9th
Rd 8: - MacPhee (132): 139GP
Rd 11: - Dorrington (186): Us College
Rd 12 - Badcock (204): No GP
Rd 13 - McNeill (222): No GP
Rd 14 - Schultz (240): 200GP; 122 points
**No picks in rds (3, 6, 7,9,10)
It's crazy that the Moose hit on all but 3 of their picks, and those 3 were 11, 12, 13 rounders. Yes they traded away a few but those players still played quite a bit of games and those picks helped with trades and restocking.
That draft is just nuts. The quality is there (Dumais, Vidicek, Rooster, Furlong, Schultz). Then you throw in the quantity of getting depth or draft picks on all but 3 of your picks is quite an accomplishment.
While this season may not end with a Championship, this is the end of this run with the 2020 draft and even then a few of these players will be most likely used to stock up for the next run (Rooster, Vidicek, Schultz) while Furlong and Dumais are pro.

Halifax did an excellent job drafting that year.
There was quite a bit of draft steals made by other teams too.
Here’s just some of them Round 12 #219 Thomas Auger 96pts (Moncton) Round 10 #183 Miles Muller 102pts (Moncton) Round 10 #176 Jeremie Minville 106pts (Rouyn) Round 7 #127 Olivier Houde 102pts (Cape Breton) Round 7 #114 Jacob Newcombe 106pts (Chicoutimi) Round 6 #110 Joseph Henneberry 129pts (Bathurst) Round 4 #63 Kassim Gaudet (Quebec) Round 4 #60 Angus Booth 71pts (Charlottetown)

That's one thing I love about this current cycle - it started with a good volume of higher picks but, really it's built off 2 drafts where the Moose knocked it out of the park in a row.
More of this please lol

2021 wasn't too shabby either. -Cataford -MacKinnon -Crosby -Martin -Milner -Welsh Only thing that hurts is passing on Cam Squires, Etienne Morin also was drafted right after Crosby too. But great drafting. Hopefully Crosby can have a strong campaign next year.

If there was any hockey played and scouts got to watch games there’s no chance Cataford makes it to 6. He goes number 2 I feel Gauthier still goes number 1, but we wouldn’t be talking about having Cataford if we start talking about misses in this draft. He’ll go back and watch the Moosetracks on YouTube about this draft, Cataford was option 3 in the way the moose drew up how they thought it would play out. The original way they saw it playing out would be drafting Coughlin then Mackinnon. Think how different this conversation goes if that’s the way the draft went down. When you think about it this draft was way more important than the 2020. 2021 they had to go by what they saw over a year ago plus who knows what the players are like with a year off.

You might be right, but I was always of the opinion that MacKinnon was at the top of the Mooseheads list. Everybody I talked to anyway. Speaking of MacKinnon, he missed a game or two with injuries and he was missed. Last game - he looked like a new player. Scored a goal - had one called back - then wired one off the iron - and his skating looks improved - with some zoom through the neutral zone. I hope he's at that stage where he takes the next step. He can be a game changer. If you havent seen the video I’m talking about here it is. And go right to 2.22 in and Cam is holding a piece of paper with 3 situations they feel the draft could play out. They ended up with the 3rd option. They actually had Peddle ahead of Cataford.
