I have been wondering just what kind of a year we can expect from Brown and MacAusland as 17 year olds - is it too early to expect them to break out as offensive leaders on our club? It seems to me that there are recent examples of 17 year olds breaking out in a big way (Doyle, Adam, Sauve) - but are they the rule or the exception?
Here is the performance of the ten forwards taken in the first round of the 2006 draft, at 16 and then at 17:
The formatting is not the greatest, but it shows that, on average, they went from 0.36 PPG as 16 year olds to 0.73 PPG as 17 year olds. 6 of the 10 were 0.80 PPG or better.
Below are the stats for the 8 forwards ('91 b-days only) drafted in the first round of the 2007 draft as 16 year olds, along with MacAusland who definitely would have been a 1st rounder if not for the NCAA card.
Looking at this list, we see average production was slightly less than the previous year, mainly because no one had an impact rookie year like Caron or Doyle did the year before.
Based on this, it would seem that with average progression, Brown and MacAusland would seem to have a decent shot at being 50 plus point players (over a 70 game season) this season for the Cats ... which would give our offense a much needed shot in the arm. Best case, one of them has a Sauve or Adam type breakthrough and pushes the PPG level ... worst case would seem to be that they improve by about .3 PPG and settle in around 35-40 points each ... still a boost to our feeble offense.
