What a game Lapostolle had.
I also really liked Horyl, Shaw, Hertzberg and Bergeron.
Saab and Fornier weren't really doing it for me tonight on the blueline, but, Ellis was fantastic.

What game were you at ? Fournier didnt even play after the first. I was really impressed with Horyl , Hertzberg and Lapostolle. I also thought that Ian Saab played a decent game , he had a good scrap and made a nice pass to start the 2 on 0 when Horyl scored his first. I thought that Shaw looked slow tonight. I was also impressed with the hard work of Bourgeois , Cuzner & Bergeron. Chaisson showed flashes of the player that tour up major midget last year and played a good game . Overall i think you gotta be pleased on what we will be putting on the ice this season

Typical preseason hockey, very sloppy, not alot of flow. Horyl stood out and was the best player on the ice for either team. Hertzberg and Gauthier also had strong games. Thought Bourgeois looked awful until the third period where he put together a couple of decent shifts. MAcintosh and Lapostelle had decent games but they were playing with Horyl. Like Lapostelles size and skating. Couldn't really assess his skill set tonight. Chaisson showed some flashes out there but looked alittle tired. Moncton rookies were over matched tonight. 27 probaly had there best game. Melindy on d showed some poise, it will be interesting to see what Moncton does the 16 yr old, they are pretty deep on D.

How did Wendell Vye look? Did he have any chance on the goals?

Lapostelle just made a damned good case for a spot on our fourth line this year. Monster game - 2 goals, 2 assists, good work on the backcheck, played physical, wasn't afraid to get nose dirty and go to the net - in fact that's where he scored his two goals. He seems to bring two-way awareness and size, and looked like a keeper tonight anyway - on top of a solid camp so far.
He wasn't the only rookie battling for one of the final spots to look really good tonight though. I thought Justin Chiasson had a very good game - didn't see what people were talking about when they said he didn't like contact. Speaking of guys willing to work the corners, little Brad Cuzner had a gritty outing tonight. He's awfully small though, but we'll see. Fellow rookies Felix Bergeron and Cory MacIntosh had pretty decent games, and have had respectable camps. And finally I'm starting to see what others are seeing in Hertzberg. Showed very good moves in heavy traffic on a few occasions, and he made the third goal happen out of nothing. Is he a top two line forward though? Still need to see more of him!
On the blueline, I liked both rookie defencemen. Saab plays a simple, meat-n-potatoes game and is tough to beat one-on-one. I've liked him since the start of camp. Also had a very good scrap tonight, sticking up for himself after a questionable hit from the blindside by Tomah. JS Fournier I've liked more and more as camp has gone on, like his mobility on the offensive blueline and ability to get a shot through. Unfortunately he appeared to take a puck in the mouth early in the second period and left the game - hopefully he didn't lose any chiclets.
And one final rookie who looked good, for the second night in a row, was the 16-year-old goalie - Alex Verroneau. Sure he wasn't tested a lot with just 18 shots, but his rebound control was good as was his ability to find those loose pucks first in scrambles. Came just 1:48 away from the shutout.
As for the vets.....
Ellis was the best player on the ice, man among boys plain n simple - even tho he's only 17 himself.
Shaw is eons more confident now that he has a year under his belt.
Horyl had a pair of goals, and showed his usual above-average passing smarts and ability to see the ice.
For the first time this camp, I was impressed with Bourgeois.
As for the scraps.......
First one was Marco Desveaux and Matt Tomah. Started when Desveaux took a hit and was just recovering from it, when Tomah took several steps and creamed him open-ice. Desveaux dropped the mitts but got off to a bit of a false start as he was still getting up from the hit. Clear win Tomah, would have liked to have seen the scrap without the false start though. Tomah was able to keep his helmet on all fight, while Desveaux lost his from the get-go, which also worked in favour of the scrappy Moncton rookie.
Second one was Tomah and Ian Saab. Saab and #25, Sasha Molotkow, came close to going several times on that shift but eventually it was Tomah who drew Saab's ire with a hit from the blindside. After Tomah had beaten the bigger and more experienced Desveaux, I expected him to earn his second win of the night - but I'd give Saab and all 159 lbs of him the edge in this one, a scrap that was mostly right hands. The bench sure loved it, as Tomah had chirped our whole team after beating Desveaux. I gotta add here that I liked Tomah, a total shit disturber - that type of player is sadly a dying breed in this league, and I hope he sticks around and makes things interesting. ;D
Third fight was right off the faceoff between two of the stockier players on the ice, Moncton's Molotkow and Micallef of the Eagles. Unfortunately it turned out to be a non-event, they fell to the ice after a bit of grappling. No winner.
For Moncton.......
Vye obviously had a rough start - just wasn't his night.
In relief came the second coming of Tommy Soderstrom - at least when it comes to amazing bird cages!! Francesco Gallo was quite respectable in relief, even though his mask didn't look in any way safe to face a puck in! Only goal he allowed thru the first 20 or so shots he faced was a 2-on-0. Didn't really have a chance on many or any - most of the others were third rebound types. He played very well, not sure if he's a Q goalie, but he was solid tonight.
Didn't notice too many Wildcat skaters, mostly because it's hard to notice the opposition when there are no nameplates and you're trying to watch your own rookies with whom you're still not overly familiar........ and also because they were hemmed in their own zone most of the game.
Didn't notice the Saulnier twins at all except for the beauty give-and-go they pulled off for their goal. Bussieres though you can tell has the tools, he's going to be a good one more than likely.
Thought Cedric Leblanc was pretty decent. Didn't really notice any defencemen. Molotkow as said brings very good size, not sure what else though. Local boy Taite Paul has skills, but seems a bit of a high-risk player - which usually isn't what you're looking for in a rookie defenceman. He also challenged Saab while the two were in the penalty box, shortly after the latter fought Tomah.
Anyway it was what you'd expect with one squad icing 9 Q veterans and the other icing completely rookies. The important thing to me was the play of our rooks, and how guys like Lapostelle, Chiasson, Hertzberg, etc stepped it up with there only being a few cuts to go.

How did Wendell Vye look? Did he have any chance on the goals? First goal was a nice tip by Lapostelle, standing in the slot. Redirected it pretty much the complete opposite way - in that case you give credit to the scorer, not fault the goalie. Second goal was a very nice shot by Shaw, a goal scorer's shot low to the blocker side just inside the post. However, even though it was a nice shot - Vye looked kinda bad on it because he didn't come even close to stopping it. Barely even moved. And wasn't screened at all that I could see. While there's credit to Shaw for a goal scorer's goal, a goalie who's on his game would have had it. I think Gallo would have stopped it the way he played tonight. Third goal was more shitty luck than anything, a case of the puck having a mind of its own - and a clear indication it just wasn't Vye's night. Hertzberg started it by making something out of nothing with some deft stickhandling down low. Vye had to contort himself this way and that to follow the Swede's moves, and while he stopped the initial shot - he was left kinda out of position. While he scrambled back into a square position for the rebound, Felix Bergeron took a weak swipe at it......... and it slid through a hole just barely bigger than the puck as Vye slid across. Just shitty luck more than anything, but as I said it was obvious at this point it wasn't Vye's night so the goaltending change was made. As said in my last post, Gallo did very well considering he entered the game down 0-3 and pretty much faced a firing squad for 50 minutes. And he brought fans fond memories of a young Dominik Hasek too. ;D

From what i've heard and see out of Saab , he seems like quite the character.

Interesting , Lapostolle , Bergeron & Fournier are on the team now because the deadline on sending them back has passed. Mario says he needs to cut 1 goalie , 1 D-man and 1/2 forwards.

usually, though, if you comment on someone's performance it's because they actually play; can't judge a guy if they don't play much

Truth. I honestly didn't even notice that he wasn't playing!
I guess what I should have said was:
Saab didn't really do it for me on the blueline and I didn't notice Fournier.
