Check out the Moncton board (also part of the QMJHL East Forums of course)........... they seem to have announced something like nine free agents over the past couple of days that they're bringing to their camp................ a few of them sounding pretty impressive and like they could be pretty good Q players.
This is usually one of our strong suits...... free agents......... do we have any of them to speak of that are coming to camp?

From what I understand of the free agent rule, you guys could have claimed any of them on waivers, but you would have had to put them immediately on your 50 man list.

I think that new potential free agent rule was voted out by the 3 leagues. The OHL was the only league pushing the new rule.
Any team can bring in any number of free agents without worrying about any type of draft by other teams. I'm sure some of these free agents are being approached by two or three teams and that's where the competition is taking place.

Moncton just uses these opportunities to stir the pot on a new season and so they make these announcements like they are pivotal for the team. Flynn said in another article that we have 13 FA's signed to tryout sheets and he thinks 4 of them have a real good shot at making the team. So 9 of them probably aren't that impressive yet they generate press and that sparks interest and maybe even sells a few season tickets. Moncton is very good at creating a buzz in the community ... all by simply using Hodge. The daily newspaper article is the best PR the Cats get ... not sure why more teams don't utilize it the same way ... its better than a gameday ad down in the corner.

I'm sure some of these free agents are being approached by two or three teams and that's where the competition is taking place. I think you are wrong ... Hodge wrote an article outlining the new restrictions a month or so ago and Flynn and a few other GM's had comments. Wildcats had several players lined up but had to start over and go through the new process to get these kids here. My understanding is ... 17 YO FA from OHL and WHL territories must first clear waivers in their territory before entering an ass backwards Q waiver draft ... where another Q team could steal away a kid you worked hard to identify and recruit. 18 YO FA from OHL and WHL territories do not have to clear waivers in their territory before entering an ass backwards Q waiver draft ... where another Q team could steal away a kid you worked hard to identify and recruit. The stealing of players in the Q waiver will likely be a rare occurrence as most GM's won't play a greasy card like that ... because most of them are gentlemen ... and they wouldn't want the tables turned on them ... and they might find it difficult to find trading partners in the future if they play greasy games. Sort of like Kevin Lowe in the NHL ... he broke an unwritten rule even though he was following the written rules. FA's from the Q region do not have to go through any sort of waiver process.

Most teams' owners don't also own the newspaper. No I know that ... but all teams need a reporter travelling with them and writing daily articles ... not just game reports. If a team has to pay part of the reporter's salary then I think its a good investment. An advertisement in the paper captures the readers attention for maybe 10 sec max ... an article captures the attention for maybe 5 mins ... depending how long it is. Newspaper articles are free (in theory) ... if they aren't a daily occurence then the team may need to toss in some cash to make it daily. Teams like PEI and Bathurst would do better at the box office if they had better newspaper coverage.

irving dosn't own the Acadie Nouvelle but the AN covers the cats just as much if not more than AB. I think this has something to do with AN wanting to get more subscriptions in south east NB since the francophone comunity is developing rapidly. but I also think that the cats have one of the best matketing plans and buy lots of adds in AN even thought it's the only newspaper in NB not owned by the Irving's

steveul, I read that article by Hodge and that is what was being proposed by the OHL. I heard that the WHL and QHL voted it down basically.
I think the OHL proposal also wanted to put a limit on the number of free agents at 5 or something.
I'm sure there is someone out there that can clarify this for us.

That's whats confusing us...things like "marketing" and "pr". We're not that familiar with these terms. We do have a gas bar that gives out posters and has players show up to promote things, but other than that..unless your involved in minor hockey...you won't see or hear of the Eagles much outside of C-200 and this board.

The Telegraph has a writer that covers Acadie Bathurst quite a bit even more than Moncton although they do get some press in Saint John.
Saint John does get alot of press coverage and it's the biggest selling tool Q teams have and they really need to use that resource to sell tickets.

deer, the veterans report in 3 days and the only article in the Post related to hockey in the last 2 -3 weeks was about the Eagles and CJCB signing a 2 year agreement.
Maybe, we have to wait for the Post to sign an agreement to cover the team properly.
I have to say that your blogs last year filled in a lot of the blanks that were left by the Post and they will be sorely missed this year.

They have done nothing with regards to selling season tickets this year. I know the have an advetising budget and should promote accodingly. I for one would have had a few TV ads along with some radio announcements with some playoff excerpts like Prokopetz's hit on Letang, Gallant and Garrioch going toe to toe and more imporatantly Culligan's goal on the penalty shot. Man Kenny and the crowd all went off the deep end there. I still cannot believe they did not have an article in the post. Maybe I got to by the Herald or Daily news.
