He's not really a surprise. He didn't really barely fight. He had 5 and 6 fights in his 2 Q seasons. He's fighting more than that but not by a lot. He's had 9,4,10,4* in his pro seasons. A guy like Nicolas Blanchard was more of a surprise. He never fought more than once a season in the Q (2 total) and has had seasons of 21 and 19 fights in the pros and been a regular fighter. The most surprising one is Bordeleau, he was never a guy who went looking for fights, now it's his NHL role. Jacques too. Outisde of his 16yo season I don't remember him fighting much.

I remember Jacques being a guy that was a solid hockey player ... but was also tough as nails and could beat just about anybody.

A lot of the NHL tough guys were actually solid junior players who didn't just play the enforcer role. I think it comes down to hockey talent and desire in some regards ... for many of the junior enforcers, they just don't have the hockey skill to make it in the pros and play even an occasional 4th line shift (with the possible exception of the real monsters, teams want a guy who can at least keep up to the play); while many good junior players also lack the skill to make it in the NHL in a similar role to what they played in junior - those who have a burning desire to make it no matter what sometimes accept a more physical role than they played coming up because they see it as the only way to get to the show.

I think with alot of guys once they fight once and get the jitters out of the way, realize in most cases they aren't going to get too hurt, and get the emotion from the crowd it becomes easier to do it again
alot of guys in junior didn't have to fight because there were already guys on the team designated for toughness in most cases
it really is night and day between excelling in the junior ranks and the pro game tho... i too would have thought a guy like Jaucques would have been able to carve out a solid pro career.... he barely got a sniff at the NHL level

Martin Karsums has been named to the Latvian Olympic team. This would be his second Olympics.
Suckes that the US missed on Yandle.

Not sure if you are referring to Karsums or Yandle, but I will second you on both. I would imagine Yandle would be among the d-men under consideration if an injury occurs before the Olympics - would probably need to be an offensive d-man that goes down ...

Disappointing that Bartulis isn't on the team. He was on the last one I believe.

Disappointing that Bartulis isn't on the team. He was on the last one I believe. Yes he is... Oh, I didn't see a roster I just assumed that since you posted that Karsums made the team you would have posted that Bartulis did too considering he played 2 seasons in Moncton including winning a championship.
