Where do the Rocket actually sit in the East Division, especially now that SJ has added another scoring threat to their lineup today?
What needs to get done to make the team competitive this season?
Saint John added another strong piece today by picking up Scott Howes from the Volts. Howes, who scored 25 goals last season, will be a solid 2nd line player for SJ. Add in Dido and Hooper and you have a good group.
Bathurst is scoring a ton of goals.
Halifax is a contender this season.
Lewy is struggling so far, but with the rumor that Giliati and Chaput are back, that will help them a ton.
Cape Breton are playing well so far.......but will that last?
Moncton is Moncton......will be around to make some noise.
Foggies...........not sure yet.

I predict all 8 teams will make the playoffs.
How's that for excitement?

Beaulieu is doing a good job assembling that but some of the credit also lies with Leblanc who was there before him. They were criticized for taking all defenseman with their top draft picks the last few drafts, but so far it is paying off for them.

Potoschnick?? and finally they are trading to show their fans they are serious about competing now .. not picking up stopgap 20's ...

I agree with the scene in Saint John. They took their lumps the last few years, but after garnring 3 first round 1st overall picks and some smart trades and signings they are on the upswing.
The 1,2,3's of building a team....draft well, trade well, and sniff out the gems to sign as FA's.
I guess I should have gone to some preseason games for the Rocket because I'm still trying to figure everyone out other than the guys from last year.

The Rocket (including the Montreal Rocket) have been in the league for how long? Meanwhile the Sea Dogs have been here for 3 years and they are already ahead of the Rocket in terms of growing their franchise into a winner. Sure they have had the benefit of early draft picks but they also started from scratch just 3 years ago where the Rocket have been established longer. Shows what a front office with a thought out plan can do for a team.

Yeah Saint John management are recognizing that their fans need to see the team at the next level, not only a playoff spot, but a chance to win a round or 2... not sure its the best idea long term, as their most talented D is still very young, and goaltending isnt proven yet... but regardless, might as well risk a few mediocre years in the future and make this years team an exciting one, rather than one that squeeks into the playoffs.

Unfortunately tied for last over all, and Lewiston has a game in hand. We had a worse start in 2005. Our Stats for the past 4 years to October 7th look like this: Yr | Wn | Ls | Ti | GF | GA | PP% | SH% | 04 | 7 | 1 | 1 | 28 | 15 | 17.8 | 90.4 | 05 | 2 | 5 | X | 19 | 30 | 19 | 77.3 | 06 | 5 | 3 | X | 39 | 30 | 31.7 | 79.2 | 07 | 3 | 6 | X | 30 | 39 | 8.8 | 83.3 |
In 05 we had a new coach who was building a team and got off to a slow start. This is season three for the Coach and he's had a chance to build a solid roster. The team is really struggling defensively. Overall the forecheck is weak and the guys rarely finish their checks, notable exceptions Main, Paynter and Kana and the only one of these three to see regular ice time is Kana. In our own end we are a defensive nightmare. Players running around chasing the puck. It's hard to tell if it's a zone coverage or man on man or some combination, what ever it is, it sure is ineffective. Remarkably though our PK is very strong. The guys hustle and play solid positional defense and challenge the guy with the puck. When we're at even strength in our end no one seems to know what their role is. Offensively the guys are capitalizing on opportunities and are putting the puck in the net. If the Team could improve the PP to a level closer to 20% which this team should easily hit and improve marginally on their defense, (the whole team not just Dmen) the team would be more competitive. If they could significantly improve their defensive play and transitional game they could be a top level team.

Top level team? You guys look like some adjustments might be able to take you to the middle of the pack with everybody other than A-B and Halifax and maybe C-B, but those teams are playing at a whole different level than everyone else right now.

Where does the Rocket sit?
Why, in 18th place, of course!
18th place in an 18-team league.
I don't think this has ever happened before - dead last !
Rocket might accomplish the near-impossible task of missing the playoffs....though it isn't likely to happen.
Still, it shapes up as a spine-tingling playoff race for 16th place, does it not?
The excitement is only beginning.
