Checking out the Hull Olympiques' roster, noted that goalie Maxime Clermont is only 15!
He'll turn 16 on December 31st.
I didn't think this was allowed, but here's my question:
Do the 15-year-olds have to turn 16 at any time during the season, or before Jan 1st, or is any 15-year-old allowed to play?
What about 14-year-olds?
John Tavares of the Oshawa Generals turned 15 the week the season started, so he played the whole season at age 15, obviously.
So how does this work?
I well remember Bobby Orr playing for the Oshawa Generals in 1963 when he was 15, but one player was even more remarkable in this vein:
Hometown hero Denis Potvin played a few games for the Ottawa 67s at the beginning of their inaugural season (1967, obviously), when he was still.......THIRTEEN!
13 years old and playing Major Junior, or Junior A, as it was called then.
The following year, 68-69, Potvin was 14 when the season started, but turned 15 at the end of October.
......and Denis wasn't just sitting on the bench, either, he played a regular defense shift, and many nights, he was the best D-man out there.
In 69-70, when he turned 16, Potvin was a dominant player for the barber poles, as they were called....one night, in October '69 Potvin beat up St Catharines player Fran McKey, knocked him out, and McKey's season was over.
In those years, the league was dominated by the Montréal Junior Canadiens, who had Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, Réjean Houle, and last but not least.......Gary Connelly!

Tavares was granted exceptional player status
and yes technically a 15 year old can play in the Q.. the Q goes by year born to determine their junior age

Like bois said they only go by year born, so as long as the player will turn 16 by Dec 31 they are eligible. Gabe O'Connor is still only 16 until Dec and he is in his 2nd year in the league. He won't be eligible to be drafted to the NHL until after his 18 year old season though because their cutoff is in Sept.

He won't be eligible to be drafted to the NHL until after his 18 year old season though because their cutoff is in Sept. Same situation Lafleur was in. Lafleur is considered a 19yr old......even though he's still 18 as of now.
