I see a lot of comments that way regarding Halifax on the French Board.
What do you think?

A joke? You'll have to elaborate...

I see a lot of comments that way regarding Halifax on the French Board. What do you think? Not a few. Just Halifax. No but seriously... I've read the French board as well. They make a couple good points, and I can understand their frustration. They mention the notion of a letter of intent to join the Q so that players are eligible for the draft. That still doesn't prevent players from not reporting to the Q team they get drafted by. If English player X gets drafted by Baie-Comeau, or French player Y gets drafted by Cape Breton, there's nothing stopping them from not reporting, not even a letter of intent. They can go to the states and play. That means that the team that drafts them can take the compensation pick, or trade them to a team they would report to and get value. Halifax gave up a 2018 1st rounder to move up 10 spots in the draft to get Barron. Moncton ended up with the dman they wanted in Bellamy. They figured Barron wouldn't report to them so they made a deal that benefitted them. That's the way to beat the system. Make teams like Halifax pay to grab the player they want. Don't draft players that don't want to play for you, and then complain when they don't show up. Remember also: Halifax has taken a chance on Newhook and Merritt. They may not show at all. But Halifax took that chance. Any other team could've drafted them as well. Don't discount the opinions of fans of larger markets in this thread. It's a topic that comes up every year in one form or another, but healthy conversation is always good.

The system will always be imperfect in a league that is not the top league in the age group.
The Q is not the undisputed #1, there are other options for kids that are just as good or better in some cases. The "letter of intent argument" is half-baked, ridiculous and frankly childish. First, you're assuming the letter would be somehow binding, it wouldn't. Secondly, even if it were, kids who didn't want to play in certain towns just wouldn't sign it, and would go south, hurting the league as a whole.
In an ideal world, you'd like a perfectly fair draft, but unless you're the NHL, there's no way to come close to achieving that.
But, that being said, the smaller teams know this. It's part of the game, teams like the Baie-Commeau, Cape Breton, they do a good job playing the game.
Newhook was drafted in the 3rd round. Barron 13th overall. Halifax's interest in these players was the worlds worst-kept secret. Anyone could have cut in and taken them and forced Halifax's hand in a big trade, if they were confident they'd report.

Unless they had Newhook and Merritt in the bag all along, no big games were played. If teams had an inkling that Merritt could be convinced, no way he lasts until the 7th round.

If anybody thought Newhook was just playing a game, they would have gambled a late 1st on him, the risk is not that great as you can get the 19th overall pick next year.

I had a laugh when Barron was interviewed by Lalancette...
He said: I was so anxious and nervous and finally my hometown team drafted me.....something like that.....
It was so evident by his words that he only wanted to go there. I don't see any other case where players only want to play for ONE team... Nova Scotian kids are brainwashed by agents and parents about Quebec.....it is pitiful......sorry for my language.
The bottom line makes a one two tier League where some NS kids clearly choose where they want to go coupled with Montreal Anglo kids and it seems that there is a nice alliance between the two.
And believe me I am not biased but you should read some comments....
I expect some more rule changes in the coming because this is a joke of a draft.

I don't really want to start this circular argument, because they same things are said every year on here, and on the French board. We go through six pages of the same statements about forcing kids to play for teams and how that simply won't work, and we end up in the same spot every single time. If you have an idea that hasn't been brought up every year, then throw it on here and we'll discuss it. But remember that forcing kids to play for the team they're drafted by doesn't work, or it would already be a rule. I see posters saying that if nothing is changed, it will drive fans away. I have a good chuckle at that one every time I hear it. That's a fun and safe threat to make because no one can prove them wrong, but they have no proof that it's right.

Halifax paid for the players they drafted. If they drafted Newhook and Barron in the last two rounds then I can see the argument. Halifax paid to move up and get McIsaac last year. Paid to trade for MacKinnon. Paid to move up for Drouin. I don't feel bad in the least.

To tell the truth, I am short of ideas on this one. However I can tell you that there is too much smoke right now to not start a fire sometime. The agents are the ones to greatly blame in this. I have never seen so many parents believe that their little baby has something real special....and the agents are good at a selling job in that matter.

There is no harm paying when you are still left with 3 first round picks for 2018 and you know the player will decline to go somewhere else and wants to be on your team. There is no such guarantee for 90% of teams drafting in the Q. This is a bonus!

There is no such guarantee for 90% of teams drafting in the Q. This is a bonus! We now have 2 1st round picks in 2018. One from RN for Taylor Ford and our own pick. Taylor Ford is from Quebec and we drafted him fair and square. The pick we traded for Barron was the pick for Fucale who we drafted fair and square. Tell me all the players that played for Halifax that would not play in Quebec and who we got for free. Halifax has 1 President's Cup and 1 Memorial Cup in 24 years of existence. So you think we are getting some unfair advantage?

The reality is that in the last 5 seasons, nine different teams have made the President's Cup finals. The team that made it twice? The small market Quebec-based team that no one will report to: Baie Comeau.
If there's a small group of teams taking advantage of unfair situations at the draft, they're not doing a very good job of it.
